Cross: State Budget is Unbalanced, Unconstitutional

Without extending income tax increase, projected revenues lag behind proposed $38 billion in expenses.

State Rep. Tom Cross, R-Oswego, who is running against Democrat Mike Frerichs for state treasurer, on Thursday issued a statement criticizing the state budget proposal.

The current proposal on the table calls for some $38 billion in expenditures. But with state income tax increases set to expire in January, that exceeds current revenue projections of around $35 billion.

“The budget adopted by the Illinois House today is unbalanced, unconstitutional and irresponsible," Cross said Thursday. "It is time for us to get serious about the fiscal crisis confronting Illinois.”
