Do you think golf carts should be legalized in Oswego?

Oswego resident Melissa Hartmann does and has started a petition on Change.org to petition the Village of Oswego to do just that.

Although there is no ordinance for the Village disallowing golf carts, Hartmann said she found it not legal in the state unless the township allows it.

Hartmann writes on the page the reason to legalize golf carts in Oswego is because they are, "Economically friendly and less dangerous than driving a vehicle around the neighborhood."

In the petition she is asking for signatures she does have several stipulations, including all drivers must have a valid driver's license, the cart cannot be driven on any street that is more than 25 mph and can only be driven in subdivisions with an active HOA, and cannot exceed a maximum speed of 15 mph.

As of Sunday afternoon the petition has received 74 signatures.

Comments in favor of the petition include:

  • "It just makes common sense!!"
  • "I support my neighbor’s right to have a golf cart for getting safely around the subdivision. I agree it is a better way to drive their children to the clubhouse and pool areas keeping them off the streets. I really do not understand what the problem was in the first place."
  • "I find this very reasonable and environment friendly."
