Letter to the Editor: LeClercq, Michels and Giles Will Have Taxpayers Interests in Mind First

For most of our lives, we have looked upon crony capitalists as people who do business in third-world countries, where they cultivate close relationships with government officials from whom they receive favored treatment at the expense of ordinary people

In the last ten years, as a result of the efforts of the first truly independent federal prosecutor in anyone's memory and a handful of courageous journalists, we have found that crony capitalism prevails in Illinois.  We like to call it the Chicago Way.  We have learned that the Chicago Way extends its tentacles not only into Chicago and Springfield but well down into local government throughout much of Illinois.

Even in Oswego, we are confronted with examples of it.  We see special interests pulling out all the stops to elect a rubber stamp village government.

On election day, we need to take the time to cast our votes for candidates who will put the interests of taxpayers ahead of the special interests.  We need officials who understand that "business friendly" need not equate with taxpayer-funded subsidies.  We need to re-elect Village President Brian LeClerq and Trustees Terry Michels and Tony Giles!  They understand that difference and they have demonstrated the courage and integrity to stand with taxpayers in the face of pressure from special interests!

Michael F. Becker, Oswego
