Village OKs Liquor License for New Restaurant Next to OHS

Crazy Bull Grill & Saloon will take up residence at 4092 Route 71.

4092 Route 71 seen plenty of new businesses at its location over the last year. In 2011 it was the home of Tuscany and in August the signing for Villa Nova II went up.

However, Villa Nova II was denied a liquor license earlier in September and the building has remained vacant since.

Now, it apparently has a new tenant moving in.

Crazy Bull Grill & Saloon had their liquor license approved by the Oswego Village board with a 5-1 vote at last Tuesday’s board meeting.

Tony Giles expressed concern that another bar-type restaurant was going to be so close to Oswego High School.

Trustee Gail Johnson said she understood Giles’ concern, and she was also concerned that the location has been home to bar and grill restaurants for so long.

“I don’t know if they would have better success with a different name… but I would have a problem with telling businesses where they should be located," she said.

Another concern expressed was the possession of the liquor license. Trustee Jeff Lawson asked what type of prohibitions were in place if the business owner happened to be “short term” before they sold the establishment to someone else.

“Our licenses are not transferrable so a new owner would need to re-apply,” said village clerk Jeanne Hoch. “The new owner would also need to go through a background check.”

The liquor license approval passed 5-1, with Giles voting no and Johnson, Lawson, Scott Volpe, Judy Sollinger and Terry Michels all voting yes.

I think this would be a great place for a "Mel's Diner!! Let the location work for you not against you!! Think of the fun that could be had at a place like that- Could be a little gold mine if done the right way!! good Luck~

For the sake of Oswego tax base, we should all hope it does very well. The thought that for some reason this is detrimental to the high school is a joke. It’s next door to a liquor store and two blocks away from three more places that sell liquor. Oswego should be glade someone is willing to take a chance in this economy to open anything. I will support their grand opening with bells on. Better a small Mom & Pop than another corp box store. Wake up and help small business in your town. They actual help you by spending their profits in the local area. Cudeos to all who voted yes..

So, why was the liquor license denied to Villa Nova II, but not Crazy Bull Grill & Saloon? Just curious.
Oswegosmarts October 22, 2012 at 01:09 PM
I get what Giles was saying that maybe another Saloon near a school is not a good idea, but as others have stated the Oswego village board will approve anything with a pulse to get business in Oswego. As for the statement Mrs. Johnson made that this "location has been home to bar and grill restaurants for so long" the only thing that survived for any length of time was a resturant. I just hate the mentality of thats the way it was before. Make your decision based on your own thinking not what someone did in the past. Here is an example of things that were done in the Past, the gambling machines in establishments. they go back to the 70's in Oswego but the board didn't use the "thats what they did in the past mentality on that one".
Cattlehauler October 22, 2012 at 01:18 PM
I guess the Board Members, after watching the businesses drop 2x2 the past couple of years, decided to roll the dice on this tired property. A week or 2 down the road and you'll probably notice this place has the exact same look as all of the previous except the 6x6 Cheapy sign will be new. With all these tax bases (businesses) dropping like flies I guess the village has to do something???? But really, a Texas Type Saloon???

Hi Sally! If you click on the words "denied a liquor license" in the story, it will take you to another story that gives you all the details.
Sally Jamieson October 22, 2012 at 01:31 PM
Thank you, Kelly, guess I am not fully awake and functional yet. LOL
Loreta J. October 22, 2012 at 01:32 PM
The license to Villa Nova II was denied due to their background check/history of issues with it in the past, police calls to the restaurant, etc.
Kelly October 22, 2012 at 01:33 PM
As someone who just spilled coffee all over her lap, I can relate! :) LOL

Ouch, that does not sound good Kelly! Hope you're okay! @Sally -- If you ever can't find any info., just post in the comments and I'll do my best to find the answer. Thanks!

I don't think it's necessarily BAD that a bar and grill is moving in again, HOWEVER, I think it would much better for all if it was more family and teen friendly. Being right next to the high school, I can see tons of business from the kids going in for something to eat after school, during the summer, etc. I know my son and his friends often ride over to the Subway right across the street, and this would have been a nice addition for another chain, or "diner" type place. I still think Taco Bell would have been GREAT here! LOL
CJ October 22, 2012 at 03:27 PM
This location is perfect for a diner type place like a Johnny Rockets or Steak n Shake...a place that the kids can go to after a high school football game or event. Just think about all the business that Speedway does with the kids walking there to get slurpees. The location should not of been approved for a bar this close to the high school very bad idea. Especially with the young drivers leaving the high school and the potential of adults leaving the restaurant after they have been drinking just a really bad idea all the way around. Utilize that location for something that the kids could benefit from!

That property will NEVER succeed as long as the same people own it! They are the same owners that owned it when it was the Round Table. They will continue to have their hands in the cookie jar and NO business will make it.
Neil Johnson October 22, 2012 at 03:31 PM
Frankly, I don't care what type of business opens in this location (within reason). The fact that it is a bar makes no difference to me. I'd prefer something non-chain, with GOOD food (there is a reason Tuscany didn't last). However, it would be nice if the owner's did something to refurb the appearance. The place is a dump and the parking lot is a mess. They could have the best, reasonably priced food with outstanding service and many people won't give it a shot because of the appearance of that building.

Another business that will last 6 months at the ugliest corner in Oswego. It never ceases to amaze me that people will bet on a sure loser. No, I won't applaud any business that is willing to attempt to open in Oswego. I really doubt that one place will make my tax bill drop significantly.
Plainfield October 22, 2012 at 04:27 PM
Can I vote for 'none of the above'?
Just Sayin October 22, 2012 at 04:56 PM
I agree - needs to be knocked down and rebuilt - it's a dump!!
Jane Enviere October 22, 2012 at 05:32 PM
Totally agree! Say what you will about a chain - but when I pull into Chili's parking lot and walk up to the landscaped front entrance, I don't lose my appetite. There isn't anything about the current building and location that would make me want to turn in and opt to stare out the window at the car wash and Subway while I eat my meal. No thanks.
mike ellison October 22, 2012 at 05:47 PM
The property is stigmatized with a reputation of failed businesses. The only chance that a new restaurant has is if they do some substantial remodeling to make it look entirely new and different on the exterior. If this new business simply replaces the amateurish-looking sign with a new name then the reputation of under-funded business go under will continue and be their demise.
Cattlehauler October 22, 2012 at 05:53 PM
Bingo!! You hit it on the Head. Same Old Owner of Building who does barely enough to the property. Look at the Weeds/Trees that have never been taken care of around the fence......
Brett Wolff October 22, 2012 at 05:55 PM
Haven't past tenants of that building been shut down for health code violations?
Dave October 22, 2012 at 08:03 PM
I think the building and exterior need a hugr face lift. I ate at Tuscany and the food was very good. However there was a mildew type smell in the washroom and general area, it definetly needs some interior work. But if they make some improvements, i'll give it a try.
Logansdad October 23, 2012 at 01:41 AM
The location is good for a Dunkin Donuts.
Walt Hines October 23, 2012 at 01:43 AM
Is this place just a bar or a restaurant/bar? I think the revenue will come in the form of arrests made by the OPD. They can sit right across the street and pick them up one by one as they leave. This is a hideous looking building and I'm in agreement with Dave on the smell. I guess this will make one great biker bar.
mary October 24, 2012 at 02:18 AM
Really, I truly believe the teens in this town need an inexpensive place to go. How about a place that sells burgers and pizza and has a room full of ping pong tables and tv for sports or whatever. Put in a few video games.
mary October 24, 2012 at 02:23 AM
That place has had the same musty smell for 15 years. Make it a gold mine, knock it down, maybe get the park district involved and give the old eyesore a lift!
oswegoannie October 24, 2012 at 10:45 PM
CJ - I agree with you. I am also worried about the high schoolers who walk to events like football games, evening band practices, etc. I hope and pray no drunks from this bar end up hitting one of our kids.
JimmyJ November 13, 2012 at 01:24 AM
Once a dump........I think the location as it is, is not the best either.
Rachel Smith November 24, 2012 at 05:52 PM
I went to the crazy bull 2 days after it opened with my husband. It was awful! They served a cheeseburger that was a frozen patty, they do not make their own burgers! My husband got the walleye and it was soggy & gross! Then the poppers which we received after our meal were store bought crap! Along with getting the poppers, the waitress gave me a plastic tube of sour cream that had an expiration date on it from 2 months ago! They served me expired sour cream and have only been opened for 2 days. The staff is lazy and apparently so is the owner by serving me crap food and expired sour cream. This place needs to close down!
