Mom's Artsy Fartsy Guide To Summer Fun

Summer is a great time to get creative with classes for the kids.

Today’s post is more nuts-and-bolts than narrative. It’s Mother’s Day, after all, so I’m taking it easy.

My husband and I took the family to Hudson Crossing Park yesterday for Wine on the Fox. The weather cooperated, the kids had a blast on the incredible playground in the park, the wine was fantastic and the live music was great. Local favorites, Jeff LaMarre and Kurt Schoenfielder started things off, then we were treated to jazz from the Shawn Maxwell Quartet. On The House and The Connexion Band completed the day’s musical entertainment.

If you didn’t get out to enjoy this annual event, I highly recommend that you put it on the calendar for next year. You won’t regret it.

There so much more theatre, music and fine arts events to choose from this summer. I'll continue to keep you posted on my recommendations. But, I did promise to give you some suggestions for classes and workshops in the arts for the kids this summer.

Here are a few places to start:

Fox River Academy of Music and Art Ensemble classes. Kids as young as 3 or 4 can begin to learn an instrument through Suzuki and Little Mozart classes. It’s worth a look.

Oswegoland Park District We are lucky to have one of the best park districts in the area, with plenty of activities to choose from at reasonable prices. Ballet, Tap and Hip Hop dance classes, Abracadoodle and other arts classes, and Kid Rock Music classes can be found this summer through the Park District.

Christian Youth Theater Chicago Summer camps are being offered in locations all over Chicagoland, including Aurora and Naperville. While these camps are not in Oswego, they do perform here and have a great program.

Kidz Kabaret  Located in Naperville, this is one of the only non-audition theater opportunities in the area. If you would like to give your child exposure to musical theater but want to pass on the off-stage drama, check out Kidz Kabaret.

Young Fox Valley Singers If your child is interested in singing and/or show choir, this is a great opportunity. Auditions are now being scheduled for the coming season. Call (630) 369-9679 for more information or to set up an appointment.

This list is by no means comprehensive. If you have more ideas to add, please do so in the comments.

And to all of the mothers out there, including mine, Happy Mother’s Day!
