Foster Announces Congressional Art and STEM Competitions For 11th District Students

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Bill Foster is inviting students from the 11th Congressional District to participate in the 2014 Congressional Art and STEM Competitions.

“These competitions are a great opportunity to showcase the talents and imagination of students in our district,” said Foster.  “As a scientist and businessman, I know how important it is that we support education in STEM and the arts, and give students the opportunity to bring their ideas to life.  I am eager to see what they create.”

Interested students should submit one original piece of two-dimensional work, which should be no bigger than 28” x 28” x 4” when framed.  Entries can be dropped off at Congressman Foster’s offices in Aurora or Joliet.  Office locations and contact information can be found here.

Entries for the Congressional Art Competition can be submitted between now and April 25th, 2014. The artwork will be displayed in a temporary gallery space ending with a reception where the winner and three runners-up will be announced.

The U.S. House of Representatives has been spotlighting the nation’s best student artists with an annual art competition since 1982.  The winner will receive two round-trip tickets to Washington, D.C. for the unveiling of their work, which will hang in the Capitol complex for the next year.  Three runners-up will be chosen and their artwork will be featured in Congressman Foster’s offices.

The competition is open only to high school students who reside in the Illinois 11th Congressional District or who are eligible to attend public high school in that district.  Students can find out which congressional district their home or school is in athttp://www.house.gov/representatives/find/.

Congressional STEM Competition

Additionally, this year will mark the first annual Congressional Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Academic Competition. Established by Members of the U.S. House of Representatives in 2013, the competition allows students from across the country to compete by creating and exhibiting their software application for mobile, tablet, or computer devices on a platform of their choice.

The deadline for submissions is April 30th, 2014 and the winners will be announced May 24th. The winning application will be featured on the U.S. House of Representatives’ website.
