Community Forum Set to Discuss School Boundaries

The following was provided by District 308.

The District 308 Boundary Committee has been hard at work developing plans to adjust school attendance boundaries for the 2012-13 school year and beyond. Members of the District 308 community are invited to attend a public forum at 7 p.m. on Feb. 8 in the Performing Arts Center (1525 Harvey Road, Oswego) to hear the committee’s boundary scenarios and provide feedback.

Following the forum, the committee will meet to review the comments and make any final adjustments to the proposed boundary scenarios before making a final presentation before the Board of Education at its February 13 meeting at 8:15 p.m. at Oswego East High School.

Although growth in District 308 has slowed from what was anticipated during the 2006 referendum, the school district remains one of the few in the state to continue experiencing enrollment growth year after year. The influx of students in certain parts of the district has resulted in about half of the district’s schools being overcrowded.  

Two additions are being built onto both District 308 high schools to address overcrowding at that level; however, the enrollment still needs to be balanced between the two schools. There are similar enrollment issues at the elementary and junior high level, all of which play into where the district’s special programs can be located. In addition, transportation costs and requirements must also be added into the equation.

In order to address these concerns and find a reasonable, equitable and long-term solution, the superintendent of schools formed an Attendance Boundary Committee to develop new school boundaries for all grade levels to be implemented for the 2012-13 school year.
