OEHS Celebrates Homecoming Week With Peers, Pajama Day, Pep Rally

Sponsored by the Oswego East High School Student Council, homecoming week is Sept. 26 through Sept. 30.

Don’t be alarmed if you see students heading into these next few days donning superhero costumes or fuzzy slippers.

In honor of Homecoming Week, students will be participating in a variety of activities, including spirit days, where students can choose to forego their usual school attire for clothing suitable to the day’s theme, such as Pajama Day, Superhero Day and Class Color Day.

Other activities include hallway decorating, games during lunches, class olympics, an evening bonfire, a pep rally and the annual homecoming dance.

Hundreds of students participate each year in the different activities, said Brent Anderson, assistant principal for curriculum and instruction at OEHS.

“There is always an excitement around Homecoming Week,” he said. “Students generally participate in the dress up days. The bonfire we usually see 500-plus students attend. The dance (we) probably had 900 attendees last year. I would say broadly, that students who are highly invested in the school and school clubs, activities and sports participate heavily in homecoming activities.”

The homecoming week Powder Puff games will begin at about 4:30 Thursday on the north side of OEHS, near the junior varsity soccer field. Because there is no bleacher seating, attendees are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket.

On Friday night, the Oswego East Wolves will play the Minooka Indians. Kick-off is at 7:30 p.m.

The annual homecoming dance for students is set for Saturday night, with the theme “Under the Moonlight.” Tickets will be on sale during lunches for $18 each. Students can bring in up to three canned good items and get $1 deducted from the ticket price. At the door, tickets are $20. A photobooth will be at the dance, as well as concessions and a coat check, all for additional charge.

Other than the Powder Puff and homecoming games, no other specific community-wide events are planned for homecoming week, Anderson said.

Because of the school’s location, he said a parade is not possible without disruption of traffic on major roadways.

“We have tried to make homecoming about the kids in the school since we do not have a long standing history as a school whereby alumni want to do organized activities,” he said.
