District 308 Holding Meeting Regarding Application of an Online Charter School

A special board of eduction meeting will take place on March 7 at 7 p.m.

The Oswego 308 Board of Education is holding a special board meeting regarding an application of an online charter school.

The meeting will be held at the Oswego East High School community room from 7  to 10 p.m. tonight to discuss the Illinois Virtual Charter School at Fox River Valley's application to District 308 to take part in an online school.

Virtual Learning Solutions of St. Charles, which would be the charter school’s governing board, has submitted applications to 18 school districts about an online academy it plans to launch next fall, including the districts West Aurora, East Aurora, Kaneland, Batavia and Plainfield, according to the Aurora Beacon.

Virtual Learning Solutions is associated with the for-profit company K12, based in Herndon, Va., that has started charter schools across the country, according to the Beacon

According to Virtual Solution's application, school boards will be presented with an option of jointly issuing the charter as a single shared school, but if districts deny the application the proposal will be appealed to the State Charter School Commission, said the Beacon
