Oswego District 308 Warns of School Violence Rumors

School posts announcement and a worried parent contacts Patch about her children attending school tomorrow. District to be on heightened alert.

The Mayan calendar states that next Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, is the end of the world.

Oswego District 308 officials are taking action about rumors that there is a threat of violence set to occur in the school district due to this belief in the Mayan calendar.

The following statement was posted to the district's website early this afternoon:

It has come to our attention that rumors have been circulating around our school community about December 21, our last day of school before winter break, and winter solstice, which marks the end of one of the cycles in the ancient Mayan calendar.

The media hype surrounding this date has resulted in predictions that include such things as a national power outage to the end of the world. The same type of predictions have been made in the past, including events surrounding the transition to the Year 2000 and all that was predicted with Y2K. These situations resulted in anxiety, rumors and predictions prior to the actual date.

We are contacting parents and staff members because we have learned of student-initiated rumors about school violence occurring on or before December 21. School safety is a priority for School District 308 and such rumors about a threat to our students and staff are taken seriously.

Our students are encouraged to discuss any such rumors or threats of school violence with adults, including their parents, guardians, administration, faculty and staff members. Parents are asked to discuss this issue with their children and report to their school’s principal any information you feel we should know.

The administration is working closely with law enforcement. Over the next several days, security will be heightened. School District 308 wants to assure everyone that rumors or threats about school safety concerns are investigated by both administration and law enforcement. Students initiating rumors or threats will be held responsible for their actions.

It is important for us to communicate with parents and staff members the school district’s awareness and initial plans to address these disruptions to our educational system. Please visit our district’s website for updates and contact information.

One worried Oswego East High School parent contacted Patch and said her kids were frightened to go to school tomorrow due to the threat of violence.

She said her children had heard of a bullied student that planned to “get even” with everyone that had bullied him tomorrow, Dec. 14.

A real dad of a student who got his clothes pissed on would show up at the parents house and beat their dad to a pulp. It's called protecting yours kids. Passivity doesn't work with bullies and that can't be more obvious than this particular situation. It you aren't willing to fight for your kids then you aren't being a real dad. How can anyone allow this to happen to their kid and not react?
Go ahead and continue to pass out posters and have all the conferences you want. Until the bullies are confronted face to face by the dads of kids who are getting bullied then the situation won't stop. What has been done in the past simply doesn't work, and that's a fact. Any PE teacher who was aware of went on with this crime should be fired. Should be easy considering the teachers no longer have a contract. And I agree
mike ellison December 14, 2012 at 10:55 pm
Why in the world are teachers allowing kids to use their cell phones to film other kids? This is insane. I hear about cyber bullying too. Why should kids be giving out their contact info to other kids either?
The teachers clearly are unqualified to deal with these situations and those teachers who can't control the kids during the time they are in their class should be fired.

Interesting times we are living in, I think the schools need to go back to the ages where kids hang in gangs so if attacked you could have someone stand up with you. I think the schools should be more leniate and let the kids run out the door for lunch if they wish. Smoke outside or pot behind the back of the school etc. What the hell are they teaching that puts these kids on edge these days?? Tis the question?? There are so much subties in todays learning it's un canny. I would like to see not metal detectors, not more police in the school, This is not a prison system. We grew up in what was the hardest times during the post depression era of old country. The fact that get out of school alive is bizarre in this generation.
What's the vibe????

Amen Kathy, I hate facebook and all these phones and the parents that induldge their families. Old school would have these kids knowing manners and discipline is great and you can still enjoy life. When I am in stores, our youth is rude and disconnected to reality with headphones on and uncommunicative. There are more of them than the respectful ones.
Jeri December 15, 2012 at 12:26 am
I have a question...has any students that have witnessed such horrible stuff go to the administration...and tell them ...or is peer pressure that bad? My daughter is challenged and people are cruel ...These nasty parents need to be pointed out.
Jeri December 15, 2012 at 12:27 am
Is peer pressure that bad that you can not speak up?
Jeri December 15, 2012 at 12:31 am
I remember teachers knowing bullyling was going on and they always told my daughter to ignore it it will go away. Bull!! challenged students are always a target to the bully. I do not feel bad for the bullies. they know what they are doing to people. Nasty people. That is one reason why society is so cold and different now. I feel so bad for this student. These stupid people do not define who you are!! There are other people to connect to. It is hard to find them when the values today are so superficial. .
Jeri December 15, 2012 at 12:36 am
student at oe, thank you for befriending him and not listening to the peer pressure. I am simply beside myself.
Jeri December 15, 2012 at 12:40 am
amen, it is through the work places ....i work in a place that does not deal with it either. common place also
Jeri December 15, 2012 at 12:42 am
sounds great lets do it .....
Jeri December 15, 2012 at 12:43 am
that is exactly what I suggested yesterday. lets get a new sheriff in town!
Walt Hines December 15, 2012 at 12:50 am
I can see who was toking back in the day.
Carol lets just keep the doors open all day and make school optional. Let's just kick the no gang activity out of the code of conduct book and while we're at it get rid of the book altogether. I'm getting all kinds of vibes from your comment. Peace!
Jeri December 15, 2012 at 12:50 am
ok mike ellison grab them by the short hairs....yes indeed people tend to listen then..not pandering....the truth to the bullying parents....HEY WAKE UP
Jeri December 15, 2012 at 12:52 am
values and principals are challenged constantly.
Jeri December 15, 2012 at 12:55 am
Lets see, internet, facebook, phones and texting. Everyone is in each others face thinking their life is all about electronic connections......superficial and disconnected. and what is under the christmas tree? new technology!
Patch Reader December 15, 2012 at 02:36 am
Student...I completely believe you. And I know parents who practically promote bullying from their kids. It's disgusting.
Patch Reader December 15, 2012 at 02:43 am
My experience is that some of the parents are worse than the bullies themselves. Trust me, some of them encourage the behavior.
Patch Reader December 15, 2012 at 02:50 am
If only it was that easy. I was a target of bullies after I moved to a new school. The locker room, P.E., the hallways, oh, and don't forget the bathrooms. The kids are good at hiding it. Fortunately, I was a strong individual and didn't put up with it and it didn't last long. But I certainly knew some other kid, girls, that were scared half to death of the bullies. Those girls were cruel.
JimmyJ December 15, 2012 at 03:36 am
If what has been said about what's happening to the kid at East is true I too wonder where the staff is in this whole thing. It may be blown out of proportion. Unlike when I was a kid, and kids got beat up after school, kids were taunted, etc, etc, we apparently didn't have the connections to get guns and ammo like kids seem to have today. Why is that? Being made fun of, taunted and bullied is nothing new. It's not right, but why were we old folks seemingly better able to cope then kids today?
JimmyJ December 15, 2012 at 03:42 am
Believe me, this stuff is rampant in D308 and not just at OEHS and OHS....it's system wide...it kicks in hard at the JHS particularly Thompson. There are reasons my child no longer attends D308 schools and now attends private school. It's not just test scores. It's a staff that talks one public story and talks another one to the students and when they think backs are turned.
JimmyJ December 15, 2012 at 03:48 am
There have always been bullies as long as there has been school ( and work too). I'm 49 and I got my share for various reasons and so did a lot of other kids. What makes todays kid so much more easily snapped into destructive action than yesterdays child?
mom23 December 15, 2012 at 11:20 am
In the beginning of all this, I thought it might just be rumors & was going to send my child to school Friday(OHS) In light of the horrible tragedy in CT yesterday along with our kids school(OHS) being on the 5:00 & 10:00 news last night Oswego district is admitting there is a real threat at OHS, not just a rumor. There are staff & students that are being targeted. I don't know if this part of it is true, but I read there is even a hitlist. I'm going to share the following of what my son came home from OHS & told me he heard. I don't know if the following details are rumor or true, but if it is true.. God or whatever you believe in help our kids. My son said alot of the kids at school are saying there are up to 15 kids involved in this plot. a couple are in custody but they haven't identified or figured out all of the kids involved yet. I know we can't keep them sheltered anything can happen anywhere, anytime, but at this point It is my opinion that the district closes OHS this week so they can do their investigation and try to get these kids involved in custody. Alot of the kids are so scared to walk in those doors next week(I'm sure some staff are nervous as well) how are they going to concentrate on their work when they are constantly wondering if someone's going to whip out a gun in front of them and use it. Close the school and add a week at the end of summer break. They might as well, I know alot of kids are staying home regardless if they close or not.
Dave December 15, 2012 at 01:57 pm
Mike - in your example that "real dad" would be arrested and charged with assault and battery. His life would be made miserable.
Martin December 15, 2012 at 10:32 pm
where did you see that a hit list exists? That is still a rumor according to the kids i've talked to at both schools.
With all the talk about it, two things will happen...nothing, which most likely will be the case, due to the attention or the lack of a truly credible threat....or something will happen, again due to the media talking ir up and a copycat going for their 15s of fame (infamy).
Martin December 15, 2012 at 10:34 pm
JimmyJ, Not sure about you...but where I went to school, the kids had plenty of connections to guns and ammo. They were also trained in the proper use and respect of those guns. I even knew a kid that had a rifle in his truck in the lot....and he wasn't the most stable of guys either.
Outsider December 16, 2012 at 01:12 am
Go do something worthwhile instead of sitting here posting about it. Go talk to your kids. Volunteer. Anything. Parents are the problem. Not the kids. Not the teachers. Not the administrators. Parents.
JimmyJ December 16, 2012 at 02:01 am
Martin...I attended two high schools...Lane Tech in Chicago from 1977 to 1979 and Garden City Senior High in Kansas from 1979 to 1981 two completely different schools both in size and student body. Schools were wide open, there was a 22 rifle range in the basement of Lane for the JROTC and the guns were kept on site. I don't recall there being any school shootings in Chicago in the 1970's. In Kansas, everyone had guns....again, no issue. Kids were bullied...but it was a face to face bully...much more difficult to be than hiding in the cyber world. We didn't have internet like it is today. We didn't have special programs about bullying either. We took care of our problems and moved forward. It was a different way of thinking. Maybe in our efforts to make everything as fair and equal as possible we've made a mistake. We created the illusion of a world that doesn't exist and when some kids find out...it effects them very badly and they don't have the tools to cope.
Christine December 16, 2012 at 03:07 am
Thank you. My children attend a 308 Elementary School and I am sickened by the events taking place in our district at the HS level coupled with the massacre to 20 innocent children and 6 staff members in CT. My question to you is how can I be sure this is only isolated to OHS? I want ALL schools in District 308 safe and with armed police officers ALL next week. I know my children are only in elementary school but after knowing what is going on I believe I would rather "over-react" and keep my precious children home, then to send them to school with unknowns. I appreciate any input or insight.
Martin December 16, 2012 at 01:36 pm
JimmyJ,
You just hit one of what I think the main problems in schools...everyone wins. Kids can't play dodgeball for fear of hurting a kids feelings because he can't catch the ball, dodge out of the bal, or heaven forbid..takes a ball in the face. When kids play softball\baseball\football, everyone gets to bat or what ever and no score is kept and noone losing. Kids get out in the real world and find that there are winners and losers...lots of losing in the real world and can't handle it.
JimmyJ December 16, 2012 at 06:40 pm
It's Sunday afternoon..has there been any update from the District since Friday?

Opinion - I have a fulltime job. My wife has a fulltime job. Our kids are in school and very busy.Read More We were taught to vote and those elected to the board of education hires a superintendent and the superintendent manages the school district. We know several board members from the past and two current board members. Hiring administrators? The board approves. Hiring new staff? The board approves. Purchasing computers. The board approves. (And we need more!) The answers to all of your questions? The board is elected by us to do a job. Let them do it. The supt is hired by the board to do a job. Let him do it. I don't have the time or the desire to know everything. That is why I helped HIRE (elect) the board of education. We hear from many in our neighborhood and the replacements are needed because this district needs some changes. Side by side comparisons? Really? That is the job of the board of education. We hear great things are happening. Let's all get behind the new people and show support. Thank you and this is just our opinion.

Ginny- you make great points. Thank you.

The school district and park district basically run this town. If you don't like it, leave. That'sRead More the way it has been for 20 years and it isn't going to change. Anytime there is talk of voting down one of their major referendums, the ensuing debate becomes very predictable. Most notably, they threaten to go nuclear and cut sports and the band and that scares residents into shelling out the cash. Remember when the OHS band went to the Rose Bowl parade years ago? There was a referendum not long after that where they said the band would be cut if it didn't pass. Those are the politics these leaches play. And I call them leaches because that's all they are. They suck the blood (property tax cash) from Oswego. There are sooooo many things from over the years I could write here. One that really stands out is a full color booklet that was sent to residents explaining that the Oswego school system was lagging behind and that they needed more money. It was later determined that a construction company paid for the booklet to be sent out. So basically they were trying to convince Oswego residents undercover that we needed more schools..... for them to get the contracts to build. And don't even get me started on the Oswego Ledger newspaper, which has the reach to set the record straight on a lot of things. They are great for coverage of area events and whatnot, but their political coverage has always been a disgrace. I've often wondered if the local government has the paper in their back pocket. That was as of a few years ago. I haven't given them my money since then. Maybe it has changed. If so, I would gladly subscribe again. If you go out into the community and talk about the property taxes and where they are going, everyone agrees that something needs to be done. Don't be fooled by the extremely vocal minority that shows up online (such as on this page) to support the way things currently are.
