Oswego High School Senior A National Merit Scholar Semifinalist

Iva Veseli is among 16,000 national semifinalists in the 59th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

An Oswego High School student has been named a semifinalist in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Competition.

Senior Iva Veseli is among 16,000 national semifinalists in the 59th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. The status gives Veseli the opportunity to compete for some 8,400 National Scholarships worth more than $36 million.

Veseli qualified for semifinalist status by excelling on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Her achievement places her among the less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, which includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state, according to the National Merit Scholarship Corp.

To become a finalist, Veseli had to submit a scholarship application, which included information on her academic record, school and community activities, leadership abilities and any honors and awards received.

She also had to maintain an outstanding record throughout high school, be recommended by a high school official, write an essay and earn SAT scores that confirmed her earlier score on the qualifying test.

Veseli’s career goal is to work in a national lab or private company doing scientific research. She plans to enroll in a research-oriented university where she would be able to quickly gain experience. She is leaning towards a double major in computer science and biological science and her goal is to earn a PhD.
