Oswego School District Revising Teacher Review Process

Changes announced at June 9 board meeting.

The process that Community Unit School District 308 uses to evaluate teachers will be changing, the district announced last week. The new appraisal process will be implemented at the start of the 2014-15 school year in compliance with recent legislation.

The changes to teacher appraisal will bring the process into alignment with the 2013 Danielson Framework. The district's Teacher Appraisal Committee presented the revised process to the board of education. The committee was comprised of 19 representatives including building and district administrators, teachers from the elementary, junior high and high school levels, and the Oswego Education Association.

Key changes to the teacher appraisal process include informal observations, teacher reflections and enhanced rubrics designed to improve instruction. Teachers will be appraised on planning and preparation, classroom environment, instruction and professional responsibilities.

“The revisions made to the process are designed to support effective instructional practice in teaching by promoting teacher reflection, student engagement and professional growth,” said Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning Judy Minor.

The changes were announced by district Director of Professional Development and Training Dr. Kellie Sanders and Director of Elementary Education, Dr. Lisa Smith on Monday, June 9 at the Board of Education meeting.
