Oswego Superintendent Recovering At Home After Being Hospitalized
Associate Superintendent Dr. Paul O'Malley will fill in as Dr. Matthew Wendt recovers following surgery for a ruptured appendix.
Oswego School District 308 on Tuesday announced that Superintendent of Schools Dr. Matthew Wendt is at home recovering after having surgery Friday for a perforated appendix.
According to Wendt’s wife, Dawn, her husband began vomiting and suffering severe stomach pain late Thursday night. Wendt was taken to Rush-Copley emergency room on Friday morning. A CT scan indicated an inflamed appendix, but a rupture was found later during surgery, the district said in a press release.
Mrs. Wendt said doctors believe the ruptured appendix may have occurred up to two days prior; and consequently, concern has been with significant infection, the district said. Additionally, the location of the perforation to the colon made surgery challenging and a closed suction drain will be needed for an additional 10 days.
Wendt was admitted to the hospital Friday morning and discharged Monday evening.
“Dr. Wendt will be recuperating at home for an extended period of time. We are happy things went well for Dr. Wendt, and we wish him a speedy recovery,” said Board of Education President Bill Walsh.
Associate Superintendent Dr. Paul O’Malley will fill in for the interim, the district said Tuesday.
