Helping to celebrate the annual American Education Week, Family Consumer Science teacher Laura Nemetz invited local food artist/cake decorator/entrepreneur to share his amazing talent with three of her classes.

In a “progressive demonstration”, Lie transformed simple, every-day baking products into a work of art fit for any family’s Thanksgiving table.  The final product - what appeared to be a scrumptiously golden brown turkey, complete with colorful garnish and even the traditional cranberry/bread stuffing -  could have wowed even the most seasoned cook.

He shared his amazement at how he was able to complete the entire “bird” in just under three hours.

Lie had prepared a short power-point bio of himself, including his early introduction to baking with his Godmother, the encouragement he has been given by his parents and wife and his recent brush with fame as a contestant in a cake decorating challenge on the well known Food Network.

The students were attentive and alive with questions about the TV show, how some of his various tools work, how much his cakes cost (look out parents – several students made sure to get his phone number!) and how he learned to create the cakes they observed in the presentation and in his photo books passed around.

Throughout the day, Bednarcik staff members and other students in stopped by the classroom to see what all the buzz was about this “turkey” cake.  One sixth-grader shared that it is her lifelong dream to be a cake decorator, like the ones on TV and that her grandma has started buying her tools and kits to learn.

A special thank you goes to Bednarcik Junior High Family Consumer Science teacher Laura Nemetz for sharing these photos and words with Oswego Patch.
