Oswego Doggy Daycare to Close

Central Bark owner said landlord is not extending lease.

An Oswego doggy day care, grooming and dog training business on Wednesday announced it is closing its doors after six years.

Judi Haft, owner of Central Bark, 456 Treasure Dr., sent an email to patrons and posted an announcement on Facebook notifying them that the business will close Sept. 1.

"After six years of leasing the building to Central Bark, the owner has decided he wants to sell and would rather do so without tenants," Haft wrote, saying she made the announcement with a heavy heart. "Because of this, he will not extend Central Bark Oswego a long term lease."

When reached by Patch on Thursday, Haft declined to comment, but did respond to disappointed customers on Facebook, some of whom asked about zoning issues that may have contributed to the closing.

"Zoning isn't the only problem, but it is the biggest," she wrote, and responded to questions about whether moving to another location is an option. "Need around 6 figures to open in another location. I do not have that. It is tied up here in this building," Haft wrote.

Customers expressed sadness at losing a business that treated their pets like family.

"Central Bark was Skipper's home away from home. We will truly miss coming there," one patron wrote. Another commented, "My heart breaks with you [Judi] and all of your employees. I never worried once when I drop off Rufus. He was always in good hands with you and your staff. You will be truly missed."

In her message to customers, Haft pledged to continue providing a safe place for pets until the business closes:

"As you know, our goal has always been to provide personalized pet care in an environment that is clean, safe and fun.  While your dog(s) are a part of your family, they also were a part of the Central Bark Oswego family.  We will continue to provide you with the standard for excellence in canine care for which you and your pets have become accustomed to over the years through August 31, 2014.

"On behalf of the staff, we thank you for believing in and trusting your beloved pooches to Central Bark Doggy Day Care.  We will greatly miss all of you and your furry family members."
