7A Football Playoffs: Oswego Staves Off Plainfield North

Oswego 28, Plainfield North 21: Jack Kwiatkowski caught three touchdown passes and blocked a punt. And Elliot McGaughy's pass defense in the final seconds boosted the Panthers in the opening round of the Class 7A playoffs Friday night.

Breaking It Down: One of the goals Oswego football coach Brian Cooney set for the Panthers’ defense was to show improvement in the red zone. Now, Cooney can check that item off his to-do list.

Oswego twice stopped Plainfield North from scoring after the Tigers moved to first-and-goal inside the 10 in the second half of a 28-21 victory in the opening round of the Class 7A playoffs on Friday night at Ken Pickerall Stadium in Oswego. Included was a dramatic goal-line stand in the final 45 seconds that enabled the Panthers (9-1) to notch their eighth straight victory.

Plainfield North closed to within 28-21 on Kurt Palendach’s 6-yard touchdown pass to Brock Thoms with 1:10 left. North’s Brett Fox recovered the onside kick. And the Tigers moved to a first-and-goal at the 5 on Palendach’s 30-yard pass to Matt Welch.

Oswego’s red-zone defense stiffened. On fourth-down, Elliot McGaughy blanketed Thoms on the right edge as the two crossed the goal line. Thoms lunged to haul in Palendach’s pass but was ruled out of bounds. The Panthers took over with 14.3 seconds remaining and ran out the clock.

Patch’s MVP: Jack Kwiatkowski, 6-3, 190, senior, wide receiver, Oswego. Kwiatkowski finished with five catches for 84 yards and three touchdowns. He scored on a passes of 11, 17 and 10 yards from Brett Wainwright. Kwiatkowski also blocked a punt to shift momentum and set up the Panthers’ first score.

Plainfield North Stat Pack: Kyle Palendach (10-for-29 passing, 220 yards, 2 touchdowns), Brock Thoms (3 catches, 60 yards, 1 touchdown), Matt Welch (6 catches, 123 yards, 1 touchdown), Jay Roberts (15 carries, 93 yards rushing, 1 touchdown; 2 catches 37 yards).

Oswego Stat Pack: Jack Kwiatkowski (5 catches, 84 yards, 3 TDs), Mickeel Stewart (18 carries, 119 yards, 1 touchdown), Brett Wainwright (8-for-15 passing, 93 yards, 3 TDs).

Quotable I: “Our kids never gave up—just like they never gave up all year,” Plainfield North coach Tim Kane said. “We talk about it all the time—keep hammering, keep battling. And they did it. We had so much adversity, some of it self-inflicted and some of it not self-inflicted. But it doesn’t matter. Our kids never gave up. They never quit. I’m so proud of them.”

Quotable II: “I saw it as complete,” Kane said of Thoms’ attempt to haul in a potential-game tying touchdown pass in the final seconds. “His feet were in. He dives down and makes a great catch.”

Quotable III: “I played the best defense I could,” Oswego’s Elliot McGaughy said. “And it was no catch. I didn’t think he (Thoms) caught the ball. But I guess he caught it out of bounds. Hey, a win is a win.”

Quotable IV:  “The touchdown passes,” Oswego’s Jack Kwiatkowski said of his favorite big plays for the Panthers. “But, of course, a blocked punt is big momentum. Team offense, special teams. I’m just doing my job out there.”

Quotable V: “One of the goals we set for the defense this year was to improve in the red zone, improve in the area we’re standing in right now,” Oswego coach Brian Cooney said. “And how ironic that it comes down to your playoff lives and they step up.”

Team Records: Oswego is 9-1. Plainfield North finishes 7-3.

What’s Next: Oswego moves on to face Benet Academy in the second round of the Class 7A playoffs on Nov. 2 or Nov. 3. Benet defeated Andrew 24-10.

It was a nail biter last night! The Defense was awesome the offense stepped up and the whole team was fantastic! The only thing that was surprising was the lack of fan attendance at the game. This is PLAYOFF FOOTBALL, and the crowds did not even fill the stands, awful! We face Bennett next week on the road in Lisle. Make you plans to attend today! GO PANTHERS!

It was one of the worst officiated playoff games I have ever seen. A real shame when officials put themselves in as a game changer

I had already seen these 2 teams play a couple weeks ago so was not that enthused about the 1st round matchup of conference foes. Will travel to see a good game at Benet though next week.

Bob; With all due respect, there is little comparison between the Homecoming game and this game. 4th quarter, 1st and goal for Plainfield with 1:23 left in the game. The Defense held them, even with a penalty and a fresh set of downs. Playoff ball is not conference. See you in Lisle!

Ya your right, just like new match ups in the playoffs and seeing new teams. Were some big upsets yesterday, glad we weren't on the end of one.....

To the patch staff, you statistically named Kyle Palendech and in truth, it was Kurt Palendech. Please adjust...

Opinion - I have a fulltime job. My wife has a fulltime job. Our kids are in school and very busy.Read More We were taught to vote and those elected to the board of education hires a superintendent and the superintendent manages the school district. We know several board members from the past and two current board members. Hiring administrators? The board approves. Hiring new staff? The board approves. Purchasing computers. The board approves. (And we need more!) The answers to all of your questions? The board is elected by us to do a job. Let them do it. The supt is hired by the board to do a job. Let him do it. I don't have the time or the desire to know everything. That is why I helped HIRE (elect) the board of education. We hear from many in our neighborhood and the replacements are needed because this district needs some changes. Side by side comparisons? Really? That is the job of the board of education. We hear great things are happening. Let's all get behind the new people and show support. Thank you and this is just our opinion.

The school district and park district basically run this town. If you don't like it, leave. That'sRead More the way it has been for 20 years and it isn't going to change. Anytime there is talk of voting down one of their major referendums, the ensuing debate becomes very predictable. Most notably, they threaten to go nuclear and cut sports and the band and that scares residents into shelling out the cash. Remember when the OHS band went to the Rose Bowl parade years ago? There was a referendum not long after that where they said the band would be cut if it didn't pass. Those are the politics these leaches play. And I call them leaches because that's all they are. They suck the blood (property tax cash) from Oswego. There are sooooo many things from over the years I could write here. One that really stands out is a full color booklet that was sent to residents explaining that the Oswego school system was lagging behind and that they needed more money. It was later determined that a construction company paid for the booklet to be sent out. So basically they were trying to convince Oswego residents undercover that we needed more schools..... for them to get the contracts to build. And don't even get me started on the Oswego Ledger newspaper, which has the reach to set the record straight on a lot of things. They are great for coverage of area events and whatnot, but their political coverage has always been a disgrace. I've often wondered if the local government has the paper in their back pocket. That was as of a few years ago. I haven't given them my money since then. Maybe it has changed. If so, I would gladly subscribe again. If you go out into the community and talk about the property taxes and where they are going, everyone agrees that something needs to be done. Don't be fooled by the extremely vocal minority that shows up online (such as on this page) to support the way things currently are.
