Oswego boys golf team wins pair of duals

The football team had Rich South seeing stars by handing the Stars a 27-12 non-conference setback Friday during senior night in Oswego. It was the Wolves’ first season-opening win since 2008.

Rich East led 6-0. Oswego East’s Chris Cooper rushed for 141 yards and two scores.

The Wolves (1-0) led 20-12 at the half and added a second-half touchdown for good measure. Oswego East next faces Oak Lawn (1-0)
Friday, Sept. 2 in Oak Lawn.

The experience of playing in the program’s first regional championship match could pave the way for bigger and better things during the 2011 season.

It started with an encouraging fourth-place finish in the Silver bracket of the Plainfield North Invite Saturday in Plainfield.

The Wolves went 2-3 on the day, losing both of its bracket matches.

Oswego East lost to highly-touted Hinsdale South 19-25, 25-11, 25-11 to open the tournament Friday. The Hornets (3-3) are rated as high as No. 2 by one daily Chicago metro news outlet.

The Wolves rebounded to beat Crystal Lake South 25-23, 25-17 and Bolingbrook 25-17, 25-17 to earn a spot in the Silver bracket, where they suffered consecutive losses to Marian Catholic (26-24, 18-25, 15-11) and Batavia (25-22, 25-22).

Oswego did not fair as well, going winless in five tournament matches.

The Panthers lost to St. Charles North (25-23, 25-21), Marian Catholic (25-21, 22-25, 25-12), Huntley (25-18, 25-18), Bolingbrook 25-20, 25-7 and Joliet West (25-23, 25-15).

Sydney Volovski’s 16 kills led the Panthers’ offensive attack during the two-day tournament. Destiny Stuersel had 31 assists and Katy Kennedy came up with 26 digs for the tournaments.

Boys Golf

The Oswego boys varsity golf team won its second dual match in a row with a 168-171 Southwest Prairie Conference win over Plainfield
South Tuesday at Blackberry Oaks Golf Course in Bristol.

The Panthers ran their records to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the SPC as Matt Anderson earned three league points by shooting a team-low 38.

The Panthers’ Brad Coates, Chris Britton and Alex Compton all carded a 43 to earn one conference point each.

A day earlier, Oswego edged Lincoln-Way East 163-164 in a non-SPC dual at Blackberry Oaks. The match was not only a battle on the links,
but Oswego is coached by Chad Pohlmann and Lincoln-Way East is coached by his brother, Ryan.

Briton’s 39 led the Panthers. Zach Manzella (40), Compton
(41) and Anderson (45) rounded out the top four scores for the hosts.
