Oswego Goes the Distance to Beat Oswego East

Boys volleyball match among longest in state history

The next time you plan on watching the and high school boys volleyball teams play, don’t make any plans the rest of the evening.

In the first of two District 308 matchups, Oswego outlasted Oswego East 25-13, 22-25, 33-31 Thursday at Oswego.

“It was an awesome game,” Oswego East coach Jim Mueller said. “We just came up short.”

The 149 points scored in the match ranks third in state history.

The Panthers’ 33 points in the last game is the sixth most scored in a single game in Illinois High School Association history. Oswego East’s total ties for 10th in state history.

Leading the Panthers was Freddy Miller, who posted 13 kills, five blocks and three digs. Jason Hines had 14 digs, while Boyer Kornfeind and Billy Burke each had 14 assists and seven digs.

Donny McGuire’s 17 digs topped the Panthers (4-3, 1-1 in the SPC).

Matt Purcell (10 kills), Alex Pena (five kills, six digs, two blocks), Quentin Kovac (two kills, two digs) and Brandon Garcia (four blocks, two digs) also contributed to the victory.

Dominique Cook had 18 kills, Blake Izzo had 17 kills and Keerthan Vantakala had 30 digs for the Wolves.

Softball

Oswego plated a run in the top of the seventh to beat Plainfield South 9-8 Thursday and run its records to 2-5 overall and 1-1 in the Southwest Prairie Conference.

Shianne Williams went 3-for-4 with a single, double, triple and three RBI to lead Oswego’s offense. Mallory Brainerd had two hits, including a triple, and an RBI, while Katherine Daley singled, doubled and knocked in three runs.

Taylor Lofthouse went 2-for-4 with a double, Amanda Muscato went 2-for-4 and Jessa Garcia had two RBI.

Baseball

Plainfield North completed a Southwest Prairie Conference baseball sweep of Oswego Thursday in Plainfield.

Parker Meek took the tough-luck loss for Oswego (4-4, 0-3), scattering five hits and giving up just one earned run against the Tigers (8-0, 3-0).

Oswego East sits at 3-5 overall and 1-1 in the SPC after splitting a pair of games against Romeoville last week.

Both teams posted away victories as Oswego East won 14-2 Tuesday, but fell 6-0 Wednesday.

Tuesday, Eric Egan earned his second win of the season on the mound and belted his second home run in as many days.

Matt Schultz and Bobby Smith also homered.  Adam Kaczmarek went 3-for-4, scoring three runs.

Girls Soccer

Oswego East blanked Romeoville 8-0 to post its first Southwest Prairie Conference girls soccer victory of the season.

Brittany Brewer scored four goals to lead the Wolves (3-3-1, 1-1 in the SPC). Two were unassisted and another came via a penalty kick. Justine Lee added a goal and an assist.

Megan Ross and Carli Schlaker also found the back of the net, while assists were credited to Julianna DePoister and Anida Phetchanpheng.

Oswego’s Cathy Tram scored on a direct kick for the Panthers (1-5) in a 3-1 non-conference loss to Hinsdale South. Amy Annala had seven saves in net.

“We played a very good game tonight,” Oswego coach Jamie Bartowiak said. “I still have lots of confidence in these girls and this team.  We just have a few more things to work out and we'll really start to see some success on the field.”

Girls Track and Field

The Southwest Prairie Conference outdoor girls track and field season started last week with a pair of triangulars.

Plainfield East hosted Oswego and Plainfield North Monday, April 4, while Plainfield South welcomed league foes Minooka and Oswego East a day later.

Minooka easily captured the Plainfield South triangular with 99 points. Plainfield South’s 47 points were good for second, while Oswego East scored 44 points to finish third.

Oswego East won the 400 (52.74) and 3,200 (10:26.15) relays.

At Plainfield East, Plainfield North was first with 93 points. Oswego (55) beat out the host Bengals (25) for second place.

Riley Vann was first in a pair of events for Oswego. She won the 300 low hurdles in 48.32 and the 100 high hurdles in 15.8.

Kaylan Smith was first in the discus (77’11”), Lauren Choi won the 1,600 (6:02) and Kelsey Hjorth ran a 2:34 to win the 800.
