Kifowit Invites Community to Address Safety Concerns at Roundtable Discussion With the Aurora Police Department

AURORA, Ill. – Believing that working together is the best way to stop crime, state Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Aurora, is inviting the public to a Neighborhood Safety Roundtable Discussion with Officer Matthew Bonnie of the Aurora Police Department’s (APD) Community Oriented Policing Unit on Thursday, August 15 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Aurora Public Library’s Eola Branch, located at 555 S. Eola Rd.  While this event is being presented by APD, all residents of the 84th District are invited to attend.

“From my experience, our communities are safer when residents and local law enforcement work together,” Kifowit said. “This discussion will detail about how the Aurora Police Department is working to keep neighborhoods safe, and what each of us can do promote overall public safety in the area. We can all contribute to the safety of our community by being aware of what is out there and taking necessary precautions in the future.”

Officer Matthew Bonnie of the APD will give a presentation to attendees on topics of public safety, including burglary, vandalism, community crime prevention, summer safety, child abduction attempts, and many more. Residents of the 84th District, which includes part of Aurora, Boulder Hill, Montgomery, Naperville, and Oswego, are all encouraged to attend and to share their specific concerns and views on how to address the crime issues they face.

During this spring’s legislative session, Kifowit supported several proposals to fight crime, including increasing penalties for sex offenders, fighting the growing use of heroin, targeting gang activity and helping victims of domestic violence and other crimes. She believes that victims of horrible crimes and their families deserve the opportunity to confront their attackers. Kifowit co-sponsored House Bill 827 to require a court to allow a crime victim’s family members to submit impact statements during the sentencing phase of a trial, letting them explain how the crime has affected their daily lives. This bill awaits the governor’s signature to become law.

“When the communication is strong between community members and law enforcement, we are united to stop crime from all levels,” said Officer Bonnie. “I appreciate the opportunity to listen to the neighbors who experience the effects of crime and who have new ideas on how we can work together and let criminals know we won’t stand for their harmful acts.”
