Kifowit Resolution to Create Task Force on Veteran Suicide Advances in House

AURORA, Ill. – Continuing her efforts to assist Illinois veterans, legislation sponsored by state Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego, to create a Veteran Suicide Task Force passed out of committee Thursday.

“We must never stop caring for those who have sacrificed so much for our country,” Kifowit said. “As a veteran myself, I understand the struggles many of my fellow servicemen and women face after returning from active duty.”

Kifowit’s House Joint Resolution 91 will establish the Task Force on preventing Veterans’ Suicide. The task force will investigate and form prevention recommendations concerning the issue of suicide among returning Illinois veterans from active service along with methods for prevention. According to a recent U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs study, an estimated 22 veterans nationwide commit suicide every day.

“It is only proper that we do our part to help ensure the wellbeing of veterans once they return home,” Kifowit said. “With the findings from this taskforce we will be able to choose the best course of action in helping veterans cope with their depression.”
