The Dairy Hut on Main is an Oswego institution. Since 1978, the summer months have seen the small ice cream shop service long lines of locals looking for a cool treat. The Dairy Hut is a seasonal business, and isn't always open during the winter months.

I was responding to a different poster, and used Oberweis as a specific example of a company ownedRead More ice cream shop that's locally owned. The ice cream at Dairy Hut just isn't good. Where I'm from there's an ice cream stand that's been in business since the dawn of time -they serve soft serve in 6 flavors -and God knows how many hand dipped flavors. You stand outside, generally being attacked by a squadron or 100 of hungry mosquitoes, but the ice cream is good. That's a stand alone place. It's not too expensive. It's not filthy. The ice cream is worth the wait. In my opinion, Dairy Hut disappoints on all marks.

I was thinking of Dairy Queen when I said company owned, cookie cutter. Oberweis is more expensiveRead More and just not as much "fun" as Dairy Hut. There is something to be said for a small place where you stand outside in a line to get your ice cream (okay, being attacked by mosquitoes isn't fun but it is part of summer too). To add to your point Oswego Mom, where I am from, Syracuse, NY, we had a dozen different places like Dairy Hut that were better but we live here now and this is what we have. As for filthy, if the customers actually picked up after themselves and cleaned up their kids mess that wouldn't be an issue. There is only so much a business can do to control that.

It's the Dairy Hut....and it rocks since the early 60's! The BEST!
