All five Chicago schools are magnets with selective enrollment. Stevenson has some advantageRead More because of sheer size and # of AP tests the students there take. I still think that Df and HP are more desirable because of their slightly smaller size.

Cops got a chance to play with their toys. Relax people. It's not like you had to respondRead More personally. Stop saying it's a waste of money. Then money is absolutely minimal. These guys were not called away from their golf games. I would also like to compliment the responders for not accidentally killing someone. It showed professionalism and did not add to the "trend" of killing "innocent" people; which is becoming an issues to watch. Illinois is one of the top most corrupt states in the USA. I have two more years in this GodRead More forsaken state, then after my daughter finishes school, I'm out of here! And now watch--all the booze drinkers will POUNCE on me just because I spoke up against theirRead More precious alcohol. This has happened before on this site, when I spoke up about the wine and cheese shop, etc. The booze drinkers have said TERRIBLE things to me. And of course they all accuse me of thinking that they are "bad people". OH THAT MAKES ME SO MAD. I do NOT think that anybody is a "bad person"! I am just trying to help people understand why we shouldn't use mind-altering drugs! And again, alcohol is a DRUG! Just because it's legal doesn't make it right! And all the booze drinkers would NEVER smoke pot. Heck no, because "drugs are bad" and they aren't drug users. But they ARE drug users! And of course they ALL use the excuse that "Jesus drank wine." Oh that drives me nuts. I have explained over and over that it still doesn't make it right to use alcohol! Times were different back then, and in many cases the water was unsafe and they had to use wine to avoid being sick. And there is also evidence that the wine they used back then was not as we know it today, but more like grape juice. But the fact remains that we know more today! We know that alcohol is a TOXIN, that it poisons cells. Even in low doses, alcohol significantly increases the risk of breast cancer in women, along with liver and rectum cancer. LOW DOSES! And people think that red wine is good for your heart. Well studies show you'd have to drink hundreds of bottles a day to get any benefit, and it's only common sense that the benefit is in the GRAPES, not the alcohol! Again, alcohol is a toxin! But the booze drinkers will STILL tell me about the health benefits of alcohol. So what am I supposed to do, tell God he is wrong, and drop out of my church? I have explained over and over that I'm a convert to the Mormon church, and we have The Word of Wisdom which we believe to be direct revelation from God saying that alcohol, tea, coffee, cigarettes and mind-altering drugs like marijuana are not for the body. We are taught the moral and physical reasons to avoid using these things. This HELPS us! It is GOOD to know why we shouldn't use these things! But as I've said many, many times, I didn't drink alcohol even BEFORE I became Mormon! I experimented with it a bit in my college days, to be bad and cool and loosen up at a party, but I outgrew all that by the time I was 20 or so! And this was BEFORE I joined the Church! And my husband isn't Mormon and HE doesn't drink! You shouldn't have to be religious or Mormon to know not to drink. It's just common sense! My whole point is that a grown adult should be WELL PAST the age where they'd want to use a mind-altering drug to get high, stoned, buzzed, relax and unwind, have "fun", celebrate, socialize, etc. What a thing to do! But now watch, the booze drinkers will pounce on me for this, too. They'll blame my religion on my stance on alcohol and marijuana, even tho I specifically said that I had stopped drinking BEFORE I joined the LDS church, and that my husband isn't Mormon and HE doesn't drink. This happens all the time. Every time I bring up that I'm Mormon, the pot smokers and booze drinkers use this against me. It drives me nuts. I only brought up my religion to tell you where I'm coming from and how annoying it is when people tell me that there is nothing wrong with using these things. Because again, what am I supposed to do, tell God he is wrong and drop out of the church because people on the Internet are telling me it's okay to drink and smoke pot?? I can't do that! My faith is very important to me! But again, I had stopped drinking even BEFORE I became Mormon, and I sure never smoked POT! Never!
Cindy April 23, 2014 at 06:47 pm
It's just so frustrating to think that I have written to the wineries and public officials, tryingRead More to talk some sense into them and help them see what a bad example they are setting by promoting and glorifying alcohol, and it has done no good at all. They are STILL having this annual booze fest. They have a wine-tasting AND a beer festival. Again, what example does that set for any young people in the community? That when you grow up, it's good to use a mind-altering DRUG to have "fun"? That is NOT what true fun is! And how will we EVER get the pot smokers to understand why it is wrong and immature to use drugs, as long as grown adults think nothing of using a mind-altering drug in the form of alcohol??? Think about it! And again, would Oswego have a "pot festival" or a "weed-tasting" or a "marijuana-fest"? Of course not! At least I HOPE not! But yet they think nothing of having these big hoopla "festivals" promoting and glorifying alcohol, a toxic, highly-addictive psychoactive drug. That is just TERRIBLE! People need to GROW UP. We shouldn't use mind-altering drugs to get high, stoned, buzzed, relax and unwind, have "fun", etc. And all you people who drink booze yet say you would never smoke pot, well you are hypocrites! And what gets me is that I have ranted against alcohol for TEN YEARS, writing tons of blogs, thousands of comments, even a BOOK on why we shouldn't smoke pot or drink alcohol! I thought I had made a difference in the world! Yet after years of typing my fingers to the bone, Oswego STILL has not one but TWO booze festivals! It is just infuriating! And again, watch all the hate I get from the booze drinkers. They will all POUNCE on my comments and say mean, horrible things, just like what they said on the other message boards. This shows what they are like, the type of people who use alcohol.
Cindy April 23, 2014 at 06:50 pm
Anyway, the Oswego police need to know that there ARE people who will not be participating in any ofRead More these booze fests, and who are disgusted by them! And if any of the police in Oswego think nothing is wrong with using alcohol, they need to realize that a casual booze drinker is no better than a casual pot smoker, except they aren't breaking the law! They are after the same psychoactive effect, that "buzz" one gets from a mind-altering drug. And that is not good! A grown adult should set an example and NOT DRINK OR SMOKE POT!
Everyday Mathematics is just one of the programs that makes a heck of a lot of $ off of the millions of textbooks sold to schools that teach to the 'Core.' The Common Core isn't just restricting for teachers & students, it's lining people's pockets.
Millsey April 23, 2014 at 03:53 pm
So educational professionals and people that hire these students out of college or high schoolRead More shouldn't have a seat at the table? Who should make curriculum decisions? The local school board member that doesn't know anything about a high quality education? The state government that might think creationism and abstinence only education is still what our children should be learning? I'd rather have the Common Core which brought together education professionals from all of the states to make sure my kids have a leg up when they graduate High School. They also brought in companies that have decades of education or hiring experience. What's wrong with having people that know what they are talking about, setting our policy? I'd rather have professionals making these decisions and not some groups that create facebook pages and youtube videos demonizing Common Core because they don't want to listen to the facts.

In the time some of you have spent obsessing about this, you probably could have home-schooled yourRead More kids a couple of grades. I don't know what you're so het up about, but I suspect it's not the quality of your kids' education.
Susan Harris April 23, 2014 at 07:18 pm
"About the "socialist" or anti-American aspect- I know what people are talkingRead More about,.....There are to my knowledge, no CC social studies textbooks yet. It is the textbook publishers themselves (who helped write the CC and will produce all further materials anyway) who are twisted in this way. School boards don't actually read the textbooks they order....I didn't notice either until the CC thing came up. Then I said "What the hell is this?" ................................................................. .................................................................................. To put your mind at ease, what you were reading in your child's social studies books did not come from standards developed from the Common Core. CC standards only covers the content areas of literacy and math. On a separate note, High school history teachers, including myself, have long opined that there is a general void of knowledge coming from students in the lower grades. Since CT's American history standards received a failing grade from the notable Thomas B. Fordham foundation this is not surprising. But it is unacceptable. Just as our Governor, Commissioner, and State Board decided to substantially improve math and literacy teaching with the CC standards, we should look at the neighboring states of Mass. and NY who both rate in the upper tier- A, with their standards in American history.

FOR THOSE WHO LIKE AMAZON PRIME OVER NETFLIX: Here's an interesting article from today (23 Apr 2014)Read More about how Amazon Prime just got HBO to stream at least some of its older content, plus "HBO GO," to Amazon's new Fire TV box, thereby making NetFlix upset because NetFlix (nor any other streaming service, including HULU) has never been able to get any HBO content; and so Amazon has scored a real coup! TC, Illinois has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country, pretty sure we could fillRead More those teaching spots overnight. With the technology we have today we could easily supplement the cost of these state breaking pensions that fraudulently get bumped up in a teacher's final years. Charter schools are doing a better job without union teachers. During Chicago's teacher strike I listened to union teachers that barely spoke English. No complaints about the salaries, just get rid of the pensions.
