The workout will take place Saturday morning at 38 Stonehill Rd.
Nearly 11 years ago, September 11, 2011 changed thousands of people’s lives. Joe Miranda, co-owner of Crossfit Oswego, is hoping through his 9/11 Memorial Workout to change the lives of some kids for the better. Miranda said he wanted to do something to honor all of the lives that were lost in the attack and to do something positive. So working with fellow owner Ryan Kovarik, Oswego Fire Protection Battalion Chief Jeff Warren and Oswego Police Department Chief Dwight Baird, both who are members of Crossfit Oswego, he came up with a workout that would raise funds for a charity and remember each individual who gave their life to save another. The workout is composed in a heat with numbered activities that give a salute to each group of lives…

Patch troubadour Kevin Trudo looks back on the 10 years since the 9/11 attacks, and urges us to remember.
The 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks dominated Patch’s coverage last week. In ceremonies across our region, people paid tribute to the nearly 3,000 who lost their lives on that day, and took time to reflect and remember. Watching and reading that coverage had an impact on Patch troubadour Kevin Trudo. We’re going to let his song, called “Together,” speak for itself this week. Lyrics are reprinted below. For more on Kevin Trudo, check out his Facebook page. Together We all remember where we were Did our mental inventory Who do we know in New York or out in DC? Our friends couldn't answer the phone All we got, we got from TV But the words and the pictures and thoughts just wouldn't agree For days there was ash in our lives Just a …

Oswego's 9/11 Empty Shoe Memorial got underway bright and early Sunday morning with dozens of volunteers waking up hours before dawn to line Washington Street from Route 71 to Hudson Crossing Park with nearly 3,000 pairs of shoes to commemorate each life lost on Sept. 11, 2001. Here is a collection of photos from the morning. The reading of the names of those who perished that day will be read starting at 1 p.m. outside Church of the Good Shepherd. The memorial in Hudson Crossing Park will close at 6 p.m. as will the empty shoe exhibit. Check Patch Monday morning for a video from the day's events.
Oswego Patch and hundreds of other Patch sites captured the faces, keepsakes, memorials, ceremonies, flags, fund-raisers, deployments and the still-raw emotions that followed the Sept. 11 attacks.
Millions of people across the country were affected by the 9/11 attacks. Some experienced the tragic loss of a loved one, some found an inspiring way to help those who were grieving, and others experienced a political awakening. To help reflect the endless diversity of their experiences, Patch looked out across our sites to pull together 911 snapshots of everyday Americans whose lives were changed by the events of that day. From across the country, this Patch site and hundreds of others captured the faces, keepsakes, memorials, ceremonies, flags, fund-raisers, deployments and the still-raw emotions that followed the attacks. Taken together they create a powerful mosaic that is large in scope but often deeply personal. Click through to see…

The theme that strikes me this year on the 10th anniversary of 9/11 is heroism – the heroism of the passengers on Flight 93, the heroism of the emergency workers, and especially the courage of the firefighters who were going up into the towers as everyone else was heading for the street, and trying to get as far away as possible. When the firefighters were climbing the stairs on 9/11 – quite a feat in itself, let alone when carrying all their equipment – they knew that the smart and safe thing to do would be to join the crowds heading for the ground. But instead of that, they kept climbing to where the danger was, confident that as they had survived other hazardous situations, they would get through this one too. How could they do that? …

It was a long and difficult ride, but Linda Pasetti-Olson and Jennifer Wheeler have arrived in New York. The two motorcycle enthusiasts—Pasetti-Olson is from Montgomery, Wheeler from Naperville—left Illinois on Saturday morning, hoping to make the thousand-mile trip in three days. They planned a scenic route that would take them around Lake Erie, and through the Allegheny Mountains in Pennsylvania. The two traveled east to join fellow members of the Motor Maids organization, who are taking part in the 9/11 memorial ceremony at Ground Zero on Sunday. The Motor Maids will escort members of the International Association of Fire Fighters to the ceremony. They had hoped to be in New York by Monday, or Tuesday at the latest. But they didn’t …

Patriotism. It’s a word that all at once can mean so much and in the next moment have its meaning stripped away by cynical campaigners looking for the latest political score. For Pat Gavros, patriotism has become so much more than any of that. It’s become her way of life—who she is. The 60-something Oswego resident and mother of one son began 2011 on an unusual mission—to lead a more patriotic life. Gavros, who is polite to a fault, set out to accomplish one act of patriotism each week. Her quest has led her to Santa Monica, CA, where she took part in the weekly Arlington West project, in which volunteers place crosses on the beach to commemorate the U.S. military personnel lost in Iraq and Afghanistan. That trip inspired Gavros to …
