Snapshot: Steppin' Up for Simpson

Students at Boulder Hill Elementary supported teacher Jo Simpson's lung cancer awareness cause.

The students and staff of Boulder Hill Elementary participated in “Steppin’ Up for Simpson” during the month of March.  The whole school participated in a Walk-a-thon in PE walking over 500 miles during one day of PE, as well as selling bracelets and T-shirts to support Mrs. Jo Simpson’s cause of Lung Cancer Awareness.  The efforts of the school resulted in over $2,000 being donated to the American Cancer Society.  Photos and information provided by Rebecca Hejtmanek

Send your letters to the editor to natalie.stevens@patch.com.

Dear Family, Friends, and Clients, Summer is just around the corner, and it is almost time for the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. You may remember hearing from me last year. Woman Battled Stage IV Cancer, Now Co-Chairing Relay for Life Event

"Jerri Lynn refers to herself as a warrior. Honest to God I could not think of a word to describe her better," said Stephanie Beery of the American Cancer Society.

Jerri Lynn Baker is a warrior. Relay for Life gave her hope as she battled Stage IV cancer and, nine years later, she is co-chairing that Relay event. In August 2004, Baker, of Oswego, was diagnosed with Stage IV tonsil cancer. After having her tonsils removed and a feeding tube installed, she suffered two rounds of chemotherapy, each requiring a five-day hospital stay, and 41 radiation treatments. Baker said she barely survived the first round of chemo and was rushed back to the hospital by ambulance, requiring a week in intensive care. Baker said she lost 52 pounds because the radiation tore up her throat so badly that she couldn’t eat. She finished her treatment in December 2004 and shows no signs of reoccurrence.  Baker’s mom, Edie …

More than 250 guests gathered August 17 for the 10th anniversary celebration of the American Cancer Society’s Summer High School Research Program at the Palmer House in Chicago. The evening included two special occasions: the graduation of the 2012 classes they completed their summer experience and the 10th anniversary of the program. The guest list included all the people that make this program possible including past program alumni, the current 2012 class and their parents, cancer researchers who serve as mentors, Society staff and boardmembers. Mia McClintic, a senior at Oswego East High School, was one of the graduates of the 2012 class from the research program. Created in 2003 by the Society’s Illinois Board of Directors, the Summer …

OEHS Student Joins American Cancer Society In Fight Against Cancer

Mia McClintic, 16, has been participating in the American Cancer Society’s Summer High School Research Program.

While most teenagers are spending their summers relaxing with friends in the sun and catching up on much needed sleep, Oswego East High School junior Mia McClintic is spending her time off conducting cancer research. As a part of the American Cancer Society’s Summer High School Research Program, McClintic, 16, is gaining real life experience in a field she loves and is preparing for a future career in genetic counseling. The program, now in its 10th year, gives a diverse group of Illinois high school students the chance to spend eight weeks working with cancer researchers in the state’s leading medical facilities. Of the 300 applicants, only 35 high school juniors were chosen to intern this summer with society-funded researchers and assist…
