Oswegoland Park Board Hires New Executive Director

Rich Zielke had been working as the interim executive director since April.

The Oswegoland Park District Board unanimously approved Monday afternoon the hiring of former deputy director Rich Zielke as the district’s new executive director. Zielke had been acting as interim executive director since the departure of Bill McAdam in April. McAdam took the position of executive director at the Downers Grove Park District. “It’s an honor to be considered for and appointed to this position,” Zielke said at a special meeting called Monday for the sole purpose of promoting him. “I look forward to continuing working with the tremendous staff and leading the district on its path that (the board) has set for us.” Zielke is the fourth executive director in the history of the park district, which was founded in 1950. He has …

Park District Names Interim Executive Director

Deputy director stepping in to fill spot left open by Bill McAdam

Richard Zielke, deputy director of the Oswegoland Park District, will take over as interim executive director after the departure of Bill McAdam, according to a memo sent by McAdam this week to Park Board commissioners. Bob Mattingly, Park Board president, said Zielke will stay in the position indefinitely, and there are currently no plans to begin a search to find a permanent replacement for McAdam, who is leaving to take over the top spot at the Downers Grove Park District. “We feel real good with how Rich has done as deputy director,” Mattingly said. “(The commissioners) met in executive session and unanimously came to the conclusion Rich was a great candidate.” An evaluation of Zielke’s job shift will be performed quarterly, and if the…

McAdam Leaving Park District for Downers Grove

The executive director is the second high-ranking official to resign in as many months.

Bill McAdam, the longtime executive director of the Oswegoland Park District, has resigned and will take the same position at the Downers Grove Park District. According to an email McAdam sent to staff and Park Board Commissioners Tuesday morning, his last day with the District will be May 4. McAdam began with the district in 2003. “While I am excited to take on a new challenge, it is difficult to leave a district that has at its core one of the finest most dedicated staff in the industry,” McAdam wrote in his email. McAdam’s resignation follows closely that of Margaret Gienger, the former superintendent of marketing, who last month accepted a position with the Park District of Highland Park. “It’s a sad day for the park district, but a …

Mike - his comment is more likely a rebuttal to the campaign rhetoric directed at him and some other park district board members about having the highest expenditures. He was pointing out that contrary to the criticism during the campaign and afterwards, the salaries paid to our staff were not some of the highest around.   more ›

Officials Crying Foul on Phosphorus Fertilizers

Runoff from phosphorus fertilizers can cause the growth of harmful algae in the area’s stormwater detention systems.

While winter's chill has driven thoughts of spring from most people's minds, some in Oswego are already thinking about warmer times ahead. And when it comes to future lawn and garden maintenance, Oswegoland Park District Executive Director Bill McAdam hopes residents will think twice before using fertilizers containing phosphorus. McAdam said runoff from phosphorus fertilizers can cause the growth of harmful algae in the area’s stormwater detention systems. “The water turns that icky green color which then in turn sucks more oxygen out of the water and has a detrimental effect on the fish,” he said.   Ridding a pond of the algae can also be costly to property owners, includng public bodies. Already, McAdam said several states have enacted …

Along the same lines, I cringe every single time I see a lawn care company truck pull up in my neighborhood. I'd love a weed-free lawn as much as the next person, but I'd rather my kids roll around on a dandelion than whatever junk they would spray on it. Of course, my husband cringes at the dandelions, but I just dig 'em up. lol   more ›

Park District Shoring Up Losses at Fox Bend Golf Course

A $60,000 loss last year and another possible $100,000 loss this year has officials asking questions and making cuts.

Mounting losses at Fox Bend Golf Course have Oswegoland Park District officials taking a hard look at cutting costs and turning the red ink to black. The golf course may lose more than $100,000 this year because of what Park District Executive Director Bill McAdam says is a three-pronged problem—a bad economy, bad weather and local competitors who have offered deep discounts. “Nobody around here thinks a loss is acceptable,” McAdam said. “We’re just trying to stop that from happening again next year.” A report delivered to the Park Board’s golf committee earlier this month showed that the course was down about 2,700 rounds from district projections, causing a a deficit of $101,000 in greens fees alone. However, rounds have picked up as of …

Thanks Liz, While this thread is a year and a half old, the point I was making is very current with the brutal flooding we arenow experiencing with 63 degree weather and ZERO golfers. Your comments are, of course, correct, but let's chat for a second about your opinion on "value" as you referenced that a couple of times in your comment. After 35 years in the golf industry, it seems clear to me …   more ›
