YMCA Prayer Breakfast a First For Oswego

Executive director hopes to make first event an annual event.

To members of the YMCA community, an annual Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast is nothing new.  But when the Oswego YMCA hosts its event Friday, March 30, it will be this community’s first. Brent Finlay, executive director, said it was time to bring the event to town for one significant reason. “We just felt it was important to implement the breakfast and have something a little uplifting, so that people might feel a little better about their world and spirituality and spread a little hope,” Finlay said. The YMCA is a Christian organization, and Finlay said the breakfast will allow that aspect go “shine through.” “We don’t beat people over the heads with that aspect of the Y here, but it’s nice to get back to our roots every once in a while,” he …

Economic Development A Focus in LeClerq's State of the Village Address

Village President Brian LeClerq reached out to the business community in his 30-minute speech.

The Oswego Chamber of Commerce Legislative Committee State of the Village Breakfast was a who’s who of local officials early Friday morning at Oswego East High School. Illinois House Minority Leader Tom Cross, state senators Linda Holmes and Kay Hatcher and various village officials all came to listen to Village President Brian LeClercq deliver a 30-minute speech that touched on topics like economic development, a major public improvement project and local taxation. LeClercq reached out to the Oswego business community, which made up the majority of the audience members in the school’s auditorium.  “It’s really important now more than ever that the business community and government bodies get together,” he said. “… It’s really up to you if…

“We thought collectively as a board that by increasing that sales tax we could shift some of the burden from our residents onto people that come into the village and use our services and our roads,” LeClercq said. Someone needs to call B.S. on this quote. The vote for the Sales Tax increase was 4-3 with LeClercq casting the tie breaking vote - hardly reflective of "collective thought" by the …   more ›

Metra Sets Meeting on Oswego Rail Stop

The mayors of Oswego, Montgomery and Aurora will meet with Metra Executive Director Alex Clifford on Jan. 24 to discuss the long-gestating project.

Is Metra on track to build a commuter station in Oswego?  That’s what three suburban mayors hope to find out on Jan. 24, when they head to Chicago to meet with Metra’s executive director, Alex Clifford. According to Oswego Village President Brian LeClercq, the goal of the meeting—which also includes Montgomery Village President Marilyn Michelini and Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner, along with state legislators—is to get everyone on the same page.  An Oswego commuter station has been a topic of discussion for years, and LeClercq has been a staunch supporter of the idea. Though it could take between 10 and 15 years to complete, and cost more than $120 million, Oswego already has a popular park-and-ride facility near Orchard and Mill roads, …

Special Meeting Called to Discuss Westphal Rebate

Village Board will meet next week to discuss, possibly vote on sales tax rebate.

The Village Board will hold a special meeting Tuesday to further discuss and possibly vote on the $300,000 tax rebate deal with Westphal Chevrolet. The board was originally scheduled to vote on the matter Jan. 10, but the meeting was moved up to allow for the presence of all trustees, said Village President Brian LeClercq. The Jan. 10 meeting conflicted with the schedule of at least one other trustee, he said. “On a matter as important as this I think that it’s important for all board members to be present and have their say,” LeClercq said. Trustee Terry Michels was absent from Tuesday’s meeting and the original vote was delayed in part for that reason. LeClercq said all trustees have agreed to attend the special Tuesday meeting, which …

On this issue I agree with Dwight Baird 100%. Approving this will be a win/win situation for the Village! If you look at the plan, you will see we will be getting a 25% increase coming into the Village. The only way we lose is by voting no which could cause a loss of all the tax dollars. Trustees Hold the Line on Village Tax Rate

Average homeowner will pay about $7 less to the village in property taxes next year.

The village of Oswego will ask taxpayers for less money in its 2011 tax levy. The levy will mean an approximate savings to average homeowners of about $7 in their property tax bill next year. The Village Board voted 4-2 to keep the tax rate (.1468 per $100 of assessed value) the same as last year, but because of an average 6.17 percent decrease in assessed values, the village will make do with about $78,000 less in revenue. Trustees Gail Johnson and Judy Sollinger voted no with Johnson lobbying to at least increase the rate enough to capture the same amount of funding as last year. “I think it’s irresponsible for us this year to lower the dollars that we get,” Johnson said. “I don’t think that’s a wise decision.” Village President Brian …

Trustees need to grasp the fact that maybe what was good years ago, isn't quite so good now. Think for yourselves, and don't follow what the ones before you have done. Status Quo is no working. Pick up a paper, or watch the news. You can cut more from the village but you are affraid to make hard line choices for the taxpayers you represent. I don't care if thats what they did before, guess what …   more ›

Cul-De-Sac Snow Removal Help May Be on the Way

Bids accepted through Nov. 21 for contract with village.

Residents who live along many of the village’s 227 cul-de-sacs may be in for some welcome relief when it comes to snow removal this winter. Public Works Director Jerry Weaver will soon be accepting bids from private companies the village may hire to help clear the cul-de-sacs, which are typically some of the last streets to be plowed. Weaver brought the proposal to the Village Board at its meeting Tuesday night. The contract workers would plow cul-de-sacs on the west side of the Fox River and south of Wolf Road. The affected subdivisions would be Fox Chase, River Run, Park Place, Gates Creek, Gates Creek West, Blackberry Knolls, Southbury, Lakeview, Lakeview West, Deerpath, Morgan Crossing, Arbor Gate, Ashcroft, Old Reserve and parts of …

I certainly do hope some kind of solution comes out of this, outsourcing or no. Living on a cul-de-sac, not only does it not get plowed, but when it does the snow is normally all piled up at the end of my driveway because I live on the longest "flat" stretch on the court. It's not much fun having to dig your driveway out twice, and the second time out of hard-packed several feet high piles of …   more ›

Community Input Needed on Village's Strategic Plan

Residents invited to community dialogue Tuesday night.

Oswego residents will get their say Tuesday night on the five-year direction of the village. The Village Board is presenting the fruits of months of strategic plan labor to the public at a community forum set for 7 p.m. at Village Hall, and resident input is strongly encouraged. “I think if any views haven’t been heard, they need to be heard tomorrow night,” Village President Brian LeClercq said. A draft of the village’s strategic plan, which has been called a roadmap for Oswego's future, will be presented and residents will be able to make comments on the document. Community input will then be included in the final draft, which should be ready for approval by the Village Board in the coming weeks. The eight-page document includes a …

Downtown Pizza Place Gets Final OK

Cousins to get $130,000 from revolving loan fund.

The Oswego Village Board paved the way for Firehouse Pizza and Pub on Tuesday night. In a 6-0 vote, trustees approved a lease with an option to buy for the village-owned building at 65 W. Washington St., which is the proposed location for the eatery. The board also approved a loan of $130,000 for the restaurant’s owners from the village’s revolving loan fund at a rate of 3 percent over 10 years. The owners, Billy Fecarotta Lumino, and his cousin Dominic Fecarotta recently presented the village with a more detailed business plan explaining their concept for the eatery. The restaurant will have a firehouse theme and will serve New York-style pizza. The cousins also have plans to host local fundraisers once the business is established. They …

This is exactly what Oswego needs. It's impressive that these 2 men are putting there confidence, money, and time into what looks like a rough piece of property. The concept is genious. The optimism is envious. Opps, did I spell that wrog? LOL. I saw the article in The Beacon-News what Terry Michels qouted. What a joke. Is this a spelling bee? Oswego Won't Hand Out Tickets for Marijuana, Drinking Arrests

Proposal would have had offenders paying $750 in village fine.

There appears to be little momentum for a plan that would have those younger than 21 who are caught with alcohol or those caught possessing marijuana in Oswego facing only a village-issued fine. In a 5-0 vote Tuesday night Village Trustees shot down a proposal that would have fined those arrested on the Class IV misdemeanors $750. The ordinance also would not have required a trip to the Kendall County Courthouse to face a judge. Instead, offenders would have been adjudicated through Village Hall. In the first half of 2011 Oswego police made 154 Class IV arrests. Adjudicating those cases within the village could have injected an extra $115,000 in revenue into village coffers. Trustees were not convinced, however, that a ticket for the …

Cary, They took your family car for possessing "cannabis residue"? Once again a parent has to foot the bill for an assenine policy. I hate to say it, but its time to write your congressman and let them know what's happening. Unfortunately, we have gotten to a point where we need to educate our kids about illegal search and seizure, as well as a few other points often misunderstood by police …   more ›
