What Will Illinois Lose in the Sequester? What Will Oswego?

The state might take a crippling hit if congress does not act before Friday. Check out what it might mean for Oswego.

Deep, nationwide cuts are geared to take place March 1. They're the first of a decade-long $1.2 trillion budget cut plan poised to go into effect unless congress can compromise on a deficit-reduction plan.  Here’s what Illinois stands to lose, according to the White House: "There are currently a lot of pressures on the school with property tax, with reductions in the General State Aid, as well as the current legislation," said Paul O'Malley, Assistant Superintendent of Business and Finance. District 308 Narrows Budget Deficit to $3.8 Million

District will delay in hiring of some staff and delay purchase of new textbooks.

Four weeks ago the Oswego School District 308 Board released a budget for Fiscal Year 2013 that contained a $5.5 million deficit. That amount has been narrowed to $3.8 million, Superintendent Matthew Wendt announced at Monday night's board meeting. In fact, Wendt said the budget deficit had actually started at just over $7.5 million, but several weeks of effort in July and August had decreased it to the $5.5 million presented in the original draft. Wendt said “bold moves” were made to decrease the budget by $1.7 million. “We’re really doing a great job of cutting where we need to, but not affecting the classroom, which is key,” he said. Really late in the game here, but I live a 1/2 mile from the Wolf's Crossing/Benarcik intersection and know it quite well. My child does not go there. That intersection is absolutely crazy. There is no way children could cross there even with crossing guards. There is also no way to accommodate pick up and drop off cars. No room.
