I just received a kind note from Maria Spaeth, Director of the Kendall County Food Pantry thanking the chamber for some contributions we had made over the course of last year. You see, we raised a few bucks for the cause at our Edward Fraidy Cat 5K and our 5 Leads Groups went all out by conducting a “Hunger Challenge” among themselves. The Leads Groups are certainly something special. Their mission is to generate business by providing bona fied leads among the members of their group. Admission to a Leads Group is available to non-competing businesses that hold membership in the Chamber. There are strict performance requirements which, when violated, are grounds for expulsion. Yet, they’re not all business which helps explain their …

If family fun for the holidays is on your Christmas wish list, you won’t want to miss this coming weekend in Oswego. The fun starts at 5:00 pm on Friday with the community tree lighting ceremony on the downtown corner of Main & Jackson streets. The ceremony serves as the official kick off of Christmas Walk 2012. In addition, you’ll want to visit …

This is the day, Election Day 2012. Even with the option of early voting, I always choose to vote at my polling place early in the morning on Election Day. It’s my tradition. As a reminder, the polls remain open until 7 pm so if you haven’t already voted, you still have time. Don’t miss out, “git er done”. What I consider as one of the most important holidays of the year will be celebrated on Sunday. On the eleventh day of the eleventh month at the eleventh hour, many will pause to remember and acknowledge the service to country by those veterans who served in all American wars. I recently learned from an article by VFW Commander-in-Chief John Hamilton that veterans are now a distinct minority in American society. In fact, Hamilton …

Have you ever wondered how and why individuals who are involved in not-for-profit organizations wind up in leadership positions within that organization? Let me share some of my observations and offer a few personal opinions. Keep in mind I said “opinions” and just like noses, we all have one. Or, as it’s sometimes said, “it’s your turn in the tank.” Automatic ascension is another poor excuse for selecting leaders. It’s called going through the chairs. Does it really make good sense to assume that because he or she was a great Treasurer, he or she will …
