Election Update: One School Board Candidate Withdraws, Village Candidate Soon Moving

Some changes are already happening for the upcoming April election.

There have been a few changes in the upcoming Oswego elections since ballots were filed last December. Oswego 308 Board of Education candidate Jill Ko recently withdrew her name from the ballot. “This was an incredibly difficult decision for myself and my family. While I would like to serve and have done so in various capacities in the district for the past 14 years, I was not able to make the important 4-year time commitment to serve as a Board of Education member, due to recent changes in my commitments,” said Ko in a statement.   “I most definitely intend to stay involved and support the academics in the District through my work on the District Teaching & Learning Committee, Parents And Community for Excellence parent organization, and …

As a candidate, Scott has read more pages of Oswego financials than most of the current Trustees. It is a shame he's moving. He would have been a nice addition to the Board.   more ›

Chamber Notes: Chamber Sponsoring Village Business Breakfast and Village Board Candidate Introductions

First event takes place on Monday, Feb. 18 where important near term community issues will be discussed.

Chambers of Commerce generally fall into section 501c-6 of the tax code which means that they’re recognized as a not-for-profit corporation but, unlike charities, payments to Chambers are deductible only as a cost of doing business.  Another major limitation of Chambers is that they are prohibited from supporting or opposing candidates for public election.  It should be noted that some Chambers and other business groups organize separately governed and funded Political Action Committees for the purpose of becoming involved in the candidate election process. On the other hand, Chambers of Commerce are allowed and very involved in identifying and taking public positions on issues that effect the members and the business community at large.  …

Letter to the Editor: The Time for Action is Now

Send your letters to the editor to natalie.stevens@patch.com.

President Kennedy once said; “Our problems are man-made. Therefore, they can be solved by man. And man can be as big as he wants. No problem of human destiny is beyond human beings. Man's reason and spirit have often solved the seemingly unsolvable -- and we believe they can do it again”.   America is still a great country and capable of doing many great things without question I firmly believe. The so called “fiscal cliff” is the first major issue coming up after the election that we must expect and demand that all members of congress must come together and “compromise” a viable solution that involves all Americans one way or another, not just a select group of people. Our problems were made together, we can surely solve them together.  I…

Chamber Notes: Election Day is Today

Next week we celebrate one of the most important holidays of the year: Veterans Day.

This is the day, Election Day 2012.  Even with the option of early voting, I always choose to vote at my polling place early in the morning on Election Day.  It’s my tradition.  As a reminder, the polls remain open until 7 pm so if you haven’t already voted, you still have time.  Don’t miss out, “git er done”. What I consider as one of the most important holidays of the year will be celebrated on Sunday. On the eleventh day of the eleventh month at the eleventh hour, many will pause to remember and acknowledge the service to country by those veterans who served in all American wars. I recently learned from an article by VFW Commander-in-Chief John Hamilton that veterans are now a distinct minority in American society.  In fact, Hamilton …

Your Vote: A Guide to the Nov. 6 Election

All you need to know about the Nov. 6 election in Kendall County.

Election Day. It's finally here. After months of hard campaigning across the county, Kendall County voters are ready to make cast ballots that could change the face of county government.  The County Board is certain to see some new faces and voters will have a chance to have their say on a non-binding referendum asking all local taxing bodies to undertake a 20 percent budget cut.  Perhaps the hardest fought race has been that for County Coroner. Longtime incumbent Ken Toftoy has been fighting off challenger Mike Dabney ever since Dabney collected enough signatures this summer to make it on the ballot.  The Kendall County board is guaranteed to see some new faces. In District 1, five Republicans and one Democrat, Amy Cesich, are running for…

Coroner Candidates Trade Barbs at Candidate Forum

Incumbent Ken Toftoy and challenger Michael Dabney square of over budget, number of deputy coroners and other issues during Thursday's event.

Kendall County Coroner Ken Toftoy and his opponent Michael Dabney traded verbal jabs during a contentious candidate forum Thursday night hosted by WSPY FM. The candidates fielded questions from local journalists and audience members. The coroner’s segment of the forum, which also featured candidates for the Kendall County Board and Clerk of Court, had the most back-and-forth commentary of the night as the two men sparred over the budget of the coroner’s office and the number of part-time employees. Toftoy has served as coroner for 20 years. Dabney served as a deputy coroner in Kendall County for several years, and also serves as a paramedic in Oswego. Toftoy said he has maintained a stable budget for the office for the past two years and …

Letter to the Editor: Upcoming Election

Send your letters to the editor to natalie.stevens@patch.com.

Dear Editor: As a resident of Kendall  County, I would like to express my support for Judy Gilmour, who is a candidate for District 1 Kendall County Board. On November 6 we will be going to the polls to decide who will represent us in Kendall District 1. I have known Judy Gilmour since my wife and I moved to Yorkville in 2005. I have had the opportunity to work with her on community advocacy groups during that seven year period. I was  impressed with Judy’s commitment to the welfare of Kendall county residents and her diligence in delving deeply into issues. She studies to make herself informed on issues that directly effect us. She shows a willingness to research issues as they come before the Board. Judy will represent us well on the …
