7A Football Playoffs: Oswego Staves Off Plainfield North

Oswego 28, Plainfield North 21: Jack Kwiatkowski caught three touchdown passes and blocked a punt. And Elliot McGaughy's pass defense in the final seconds boosted the Panthers in the opening round of the Class 7A playoffs Friday night.

Breaking It Down: One of the goals Oswego football coach Brian Cooney set for the Panthers’ defense was to show improvement in the red zone. Now, Cooney can check that item off his to-do list. Oswego twice stopped Plainfield North from scoring after the Tigers moved to first-and-goal inside the 10 in the second half of a 28-21 victory in the opening round of the Class 7A playoffs on Friday night at Ken Pickerall Stadium in Oswego. Included was a dramatic goal-line stand in the final 45 seconds that enabled the Panthers (9-1) to notch their eighth straight victory. Plainfield North closed to within 28-21 on Kurt Palendach’s 6-yard touchdown pass to Brock Thoms with 1:10 left. North’s Brett Fox recovered the onside kick. And the Tigers moved…

Oswego Sports Roundup

Future looks bright for Oswego, Oswego East

Rosters short on seniors, long on underclassmen

Fans of the Oswego and Oswego East high school boys basketball team might want to wear shades to the games next year. That’s because the future looks bright. Although the Panthers and Wolves did not advance in the Class 4A state tournament, both programs have a lot to look forward to in the coming years. Oswego went 18-9 overall, 10-4 to finish second in the Southwest Prairie Conference and its starting lineup was void of seniors. Of its 14 rostered players, 12 of them are eligible to return next year with a year of seasoning under their belts. That means the Panthers could be the early favorites to win in the balanced and improving SPC in 2012. “We’re young and skilled,” Oswego coach Kevin Schnable said. “We just have to learn how to play…

Boys Basketball: Brooks Drives Oswego East to Thrilling Win over Oswego

Oswego East 80, Oswego 78. Senior guard comes up big late as Wolves beat rivals to stay in conference race.

The Hot Read: The host Panthers led 46-39 at the half as Ryan West and Elliot McGaughy combined for 29 points, but Oswego East made plenty of big plays late to avenge an earlier loss to Oswego and to climb back into the Southwest Prairie Conference race. Wesley Brooks, who sat much of the second quarter after picking up his second foul, scored five points late in a third-quarter charge and then tallied eight points in the decisive fourth quarter. McGaughy finished with a game-high 29 points for Oswego, but West was limited to six points in the second half, including a put-back at the buzzer that left his team two points shy of catching the Wolves. Patch’s MVP: Even in a losing effort, Oswego’s Elliot McGaughy put on quite a show (29 points…

Boys Basketball: Oswego Clips Plainfield South, Takes League Lead

Oswego 73, Plainfield South 70. Panthers shoot their way to road win over Cougars in Southwest Prairie Conference thriller.

The Hot Read: Oswego made 11 three-pointers and 10-of-15 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter of Tuesday's 73-70 boys basketball victory over Plainfield South. Turning Point: Oswego junior Ryan West made just one three-pointer, but it gave the Panthers the lead for good at 63-61 with 2:15 to play. It was the fourth and final lead change of the fourth quarter. Oswego Leaders: Oswego sophomore guards Elliot McGaughy (26 points) and Miles Simelton (18) combined for 44 points and 10 three-pointers. West added 16 points. Plainfield South Leaders: Junior guard Ed Presniakovas and senior forward Zach Snowden each scored 21 points. Patch's MVP: McGaughy scored 19 of his 26 points in the first half, which included four 3-pointers. Team …

McGaughy Quarterbacks Panthers Past Romeoville Boys

Point guard helps Oswego blast Spartans during a 46-21 first-half charge.

There was blue and orange everywhere and a “quarterback” helped lead the way, but we’re not talking about a Bears football game. No, it was Friday’s boys basketball, and Romeoville traveled to Oswego in a conference game between two teams sporting orange and blue. Oswego stayed atop the league standings with a 77-59 victory that featured a near-perfect first half by the Panthers led by the stellar play of the offense’s quarterback, point guard Elliot McGaughy. With the Panthers’ sophomore floor general running the attack, Oswego blitzed the Spartans (3-14, 1-5) with a 23-7 first quarter and then hit the visitors with another 23 points in the second for a commanding 46-21 lead at the half. “Coach told me before the game that I had to be the…

Boys Basketball: Oswego Finishes in Grand Fashion With West Pouring in 31

Ryan West pours in a career-high 31 points as the Panthers close with a 36-8 run to defeat Ottawa's Pirates 84-55.

Visiting Ottawa and its fans had to be thrilled with the way the Pirates ran up and down the floor and stayed right with Oswego’s boys basketball team for 2½ quarters on Tuesday night. But from there, no, not so much to be thrilled with. Ottawa (4-12) trailed the host Panthers just 48-47 following a lay-up from Kyle McLendon off an inbounds pass. But Oswego (11-5) countered with a three-point play from Elliot McGaughy that started a nice 12-0 run that eventually turned into an amazing 36-8 close and an 84-55 victory. The Panthers, who suffered a setback to one of the state’s top teams in Saturday’s loss to unbeaten Benet Academy, used a pressuring defense to force 26 Pirates turnovers. Many of the miscues, especially those over the final …

Boys Basketball: Panthers Humbled by Unbeaten Benet

Oswego unable to follow up Friday's emotional win over Plainfield North in Saturday showdown vs. Redwings.

NAPERVILLE – Riding the momentum and emotion of Friday’s upset win over Plainfield North, Oswego’s boys basketball team was flying high heading into Saturday’s showdown with unbeaten Benet at the Naperville North Shootout. And the Panthers received even more good news before the game when they learned the Redwings would be short-handed with Northwestern-bound point guard Dave Sobolewski on the bench in a suit for Benet because of a back injury. But the young Panthers struggled all night, falling behind 10-0 at the outset and losing 58-33 to the powerful Redwings. “Tonight, we’re going to have to chalk it up to a learning experience,” Oswego coach Kevin Schnable said. “We got our butts kicked. They were physical with us. The game got tough…

Oswego Breaks Free from Plainfield North and into First Place

Panthers go 13-for-13 from the line in the fourth quarter while knocking off the more experienced Tigers, 59-56.

At this point in the season, it might be time to stop talking about how young Oswego’s boys basketball team is. Still, you can’t help but think some of their players really grew up Friday night. In a wild back-and-forth battle with visiting Plainfield North — and with first place in the Southwest Prairie Conference on the line — every possession down the stretch was critical. And even as the more experienced Tigers led 39-36 after three quarters and also held a 49-45 lead with just more than three minutes to play, the Panthers pulled out a huge 59-56 victory in large part because of the stellar play of three sophomores. Oswego (10-4, 4-1) went 13-for-13 from the free-throw line, with sophomore Elliot McGaughy going 9-for-9 and fellow …

Panthers' Brilliant Backcourt Play Snaps Skid

Miles Simelton and Elliot McGaughy, both sophomore guards for Oswego, scored 25 points apiece to lead the Panthers past Yorkville 75-68 Saturday night in non-conference boys basketball action.

Miles Simelton and Elliot McGaughy played well beyond their years Saturday night in Yorkville. The Oswego sophomore guards were virtually unstoppable, scoring 25 points apiece to frame the Panthers’ 75-68 victory over the Foxes in non-conference boys basketball action. After dropping four of its last six games, Oswego improved to 9-4 with the road win. Yorkville fell to 9-6. “We desperately needed this (win),” Oswego coach Kevin Schnable said. “We struggled at York (1-3 over the holidays). We haven’t had much continuity with our starting lineup lately.” The Panthers were without the services of leading scorer Ryan West, who was on a football recruiting trip to Texas. Simelton and McGaughy more than filled in for the highly rated …
