Oswego Wrestlers Flatten Plainfield East

On a night when Oswego honored its five seniors, underclassmen Nick Schultz and Frank Yattoni set the tone in the Panthers' 57-15 victory over the Bengals with two quick wins out of the gate.

Nick Schultz and Frank Yattoni provided the spark for the Oswego wrestling team Thursday night at home. Schultz, a 103-pound freshman, and Yattoni, a sophomore competing at 112, had a second-period fall and a technical fall, respectively, to jump-start the Panthers in their regular-season finale against Plainfield East. The Panthers’ bookends were equally dominant in the Southwest Prairie Conference dual meet as Oswego ended the match with a 31-point burst in claiming the 57-15 victory. “I just took him down in the first period,” Schultz said of his 4-1 lead after the first two minutes. “I tried to wrestle as well as I could. The pin came with it.” Yattoni only wanted to maintain the Panthers’ early cushion. “(The Schultz fall) made it …

Minooka Blasts Past Charlebois, Panthers

Defending Class 3A state champs win first 10 matches en route to 51-12 romp over Oswego.

Oswego first-year wrestling coach Jeff Charlebois experienced his fair share of big victories as an assistant coach for Minooka. On Thursday, he felt what it was like going against the defending Class 3A state champs. Minooka won the first 10 matches and cruised to a 51-12 victory. "We took care of business, I guess, and hopefully we can get better," Minooka coach Bernie Ruettiger said. "We miss Jeff (Charlebois) and I don't care what the score was, but his kids looked good. We've got some kids out still and aren't at full strength, but we will be." Javon Lee allowed the Panthers to finish strongly, winning at heavyweight with a pin at 2:41. "When we're doing this bad it gives me, I don't know how to say it, but it makes me want to win …

Panthers Look for a Wrestling Revival

First-year coach Jeff Charlebois hopes to return Oswego to the glory days of legend Ken Pickerill.

Reminders of Oswego’s storied wrestling past are plentiful in the halls at Oswego High School. Fortunately for Panther faithful, there are several hints toward a bright future, too. When rival Oswego East High School crossed town Dec. 1 for a wrestling dual, visitors to the meet couldn’t help but see the trophies and plaques dating back to the 1950s. Several state-placing wrestlers’ names are on the wall of fame next to a plaque honoring the recipients of the Ken Pickerill Lifetime Achievement Award, named for the school’s first varsity wrestling coach. And it was none other than Pickerill himself leaning against a gym wall that day and watching as a young Panthers team took on visiting East in a tight dual in front of a large crowd. …
