Fourth grade teacher Nick Buono presents " The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles" at the first breakfast book chat, complete with acting and voices with his fellow teachers.
What do donuts, Whangdoodles and smelly gym socks have in common? They were all part of the first Breakfast Book Chat of the year at Lakewood Creek Elementary. The event, said fifth grade teacher Tim Harris, invites third, fourth and fifth grade students to listen to one teacher talk about a favorite book while enjoying juice and donuts. Fourth grade teacher Nick Buono presented, “The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles,” written by famous actress Julie Andrews. Buono described how when he was younger he read the book to his cousin, who didn’t like to read at all, with the promise of if they read some of it they could do fun activities the next day. All proceeds from the garage sales will go towards Lakewood Creek first grade teacher Cheryl Pavelka.
The Lakewood Creek community is reaching out to help first grade teacher Chereyl Pavelka through a series of garage sales this weekend. Tina Juillett, one of three organizers for the event, said Pavelka is currently on leave to care for her husband, Sam, who is battling a second round of bone cancer. Sam, also a teacher, is also on leave. Pavelka is also undergoing a high risk pregnancy with the baby due sometime in October. Juillet, whose daughter is in Pavelka’s class, said the baby is showing signs of kidney problems. “We are donating all the proceeds for their medical expenses,” said Juillet. Name Gamble Davis School Lakewood Creek Elementary Grade Fourth Accomplishments Gamble is very involved to Scouts and giving back to his community. He has helped clean up area retention ponds, excelled at raising money through popcorn sales and getting donations for those serving in the military. Gamble has even helped donate his time for Feed My Starving Children. What makes Gamble so awesome When he was 4 years old, Gamble was diagnosed as being legally blind but in that same year, he also tested into second grade. These are two teachers that genuinely care about the successes of their students both in and out of the classroom.
