Little White School Museum Announces Fall Program Series

Various events include the annual cemetery walk, junior curator workshop and more.

Oswego’s Little White School Museum is gearing up to present their fall program series. Geology and History of Meramech Hill The 2012 Fall Series begins at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, with “The Geology and History of Meramech Hill” by geologist and historian Michael Chuinard. Chuinard will discuss the reasons why Meramech Hill is one of the most historic sites in Kendall County—although it may not be historic for reasons many believe. Meramech Hill is located near Plano at the confluence of Big Rock and Little Rock creeks and the two creeks’ mouth on the Fox River. Long believed to be the site of a climactic 1730 battle between the Fox Indian Tribe and the French and their Native American allies, it now appears the battle did not take …

Snapshot: Annual Oswego Quilt Raffle Benefits Little White School Museum

If you have a photo you'd like to see in our weekly snapshot, write Natalie Stevens at natalie.stevens@patch.com.

The Quilters' Dozen Quilt Club of Oswego has donated $600 to Oswego’s Little White School Museum to help the museum with operating expenses. The money was raised during the club's annual PrairieFest Quilt Raffle. Each year the  Quilter's Club, which meets weekly at the museum, creates an original quilt design and then sews the quilt by hand. The finished quilt is raffled during the PrairieFest celebration, with the profits split between the museum and the Oswegoland Park District. The museum plans to use the donation to purchase acid-free storage materials and other items required to safely store their collections of items ranging from vintage textiles, to photographs, to original documents. “We recently spent well over $200 on acid-free …

The LWSH is a waste of taxpayer's money. It is in Oswego and its research is predomoninantly regarding Oswego, yet it pulls tax money in from the unincorporated areas as well as Aurora, Joliet, & Plainfield. It is basically a private project of Roger Matile that operates on the backs of taxpayers. Are they ever going to get the outside professional finished? It's been in rough shape for years …   more ›

Confrontation Boils Over at Park Board Workshop

Commissioner and Oswegoland Park District critic Len Wass presented his campaign financial analysis to his fellow commissioners Wednesday morning at the Little White School Museum. It was less than warmly received.

The tension between members of the Oswegoland Park District Board continued Wednesday morning at a four-hour board workshop held at the Little White School Museum. Commissioners met to discuss a wide range of issues, but spent most of their time arguing about newly-elected member Len Wass’ campaign study of park district spending. Allegations that Wass manipulated the district’s budget numbers to shed a negative light on spending stretched out over his nearly 90-minute presentation of his analysis, which was widely disseminated during the campaign earlier this year. Commissioners agreed to allow Wass to provide his analysis at the workshop meeting after a report in the Aurora Beacon News said that his claims that the park district spends …

Park Board Approves Bigger Pool Deck for Civic Center Aquatic Park

Commissioners also hear report from staff on upcoming pool season.

The Civic Center Aquatic Park is set to receive a larger pool deck area adjacent to the swimming lanes after a unanimous Oswegoland Park District board vote to approve the project Thursday night. The Park District will spend about $12,700 of pool revenue funds to enlarge the concrete deck and add a sunshade, which will allow for more seating. The project also will include replacing worn out play equipment in the sand area. Five new pieces will be installed. The work at the pool should be complete by its May 28 opening. The contract for the work was awarded to the lowest bidder—Ed Henry Concrete, Construction and Maintenance out of Sheridan. In all, five bids were received. The Park Board also heard a report from staff, updating …
