12.6 full-time equivalent positions were approved by the Oswego District 308 board Monday evening for the positions of general education, ELL/ESL and special education teachers, as well as certified nurses.
After almost two hours of discussion, sections of the Oswego District 308 staffing plan for the 2013-14 school year have been approved. The plan, presented two weeks ago by executive director for administrative services John Sparlin asked for a total of 37.6 full-time equivalent positions with a cost of $1.8 million. On Monday night the board had on their agenda the positions of general education teachers, special education teachers, ESL/ELL teachers, AT teachers, certified nurses, assistant principals and speech pathologist for a total of 19.1 FTE at a cost of $1,049,120. There have been plenty of new faces around Oswego 308 lately and there could soon be several more. John Sparlin, executive director for administrative services, presented the 2013-14 school year staffing plan to the Oswego 308 board, which would include positions of new teachers, administrators and support staff for a total of 37.6 full-time equivalent positions. The cost is an estimated $1.8 million for all of the positions. That total includes roughly 15 new classroom teachers, including four in special education classrooms and three federally mandated teachers for English Language Learners. Not too many changes other than new members on the Oswego 308 school board.
On Monday night four new members joined the Oswego 308 school board: Matthew Bauman, Greg O’Neil, Danielle Paul and Mike McDowell. Once all four new members were seated the board had to then elect a new president, vice president and secretary, which were being served by Bill Walsh, Alison Swanson, and departing Laurie Pasteris, respectively. The board elected Superintendent Matthew Wendt as President Pro Tempore to serve as president while a new one was elected. Board member Brent Lightfoot nominated Bill Walsh and was seconded by newly seated member Greg O’Neil. Walsh was voted unanimously to serve as president once more. The balancing of the budget was made by cuts, delayed purchasing, audits and more.
After approving a budget for the 2012-13 school year with a $2.6 million deficit in September, the Oswego 308 School District has now reduced the deficit to zero. Superintendent Matthew Wendt announced the deficit reduction at the Monday night school board meeting, stating that the reduction came from delayed purchases and professional development, spending freezes, decreased medical and dental costs across the district, budget analysis and programming audits. “I’ve had more audits in the last 10 months than I’ve had in my career,” said Wendt. When the budget was originally presented to the board of education in August it had been cut to a $5.5 million deficit from an original $7.5 million deficit. It was cut in early September to $3.8 …
