School Board Positions Unanimously Approved

Not too many changes other than new members on the Oswego 308 school board.

On Monday night  four new members joined the Oswego 308 school board: Matthew Bauman, Greg O’Neil, Danielle Paul and Mike McDowell. Once all four new members were seated the board had to then elect a new president, vice president and secretary, which were being served by Bill Walsh, Alison Swanson, and departing Laurie Pasteris, respectively. The board elected Superintendent Matthew Wendt as President Pro Tempore to serve as president while a new one was elected. Board member Brent Lightfoot nominated Bill Walsh and was seconded by newly seated member Greg O’Neil. Walsh was voted unanimously to serve as president once more. Matthew Bauman then made a motion for Alison Swanson for vice-president, which was seconded by Brent Lightfoot and …

District 308 Budget Deficit For 2012-13 School Year Reduced to Zero

The balancing of the budget was made by cuts, delayed purchasing, audits and more.

After approving a budget for the 2012-13 school year with a $2.6 million deficit in September, the Oswego 308 School District has now reduced the deficit to zero. Superintendent Matthew Wendt announced the deficit reduction at the Monday night school board meeting, stating that the reduction came from delayed purchases and professional development, spending freezes, decreased medical and dental costs across the district, budget analysis and programming audits. “I’ve had more audits in the last 10 months than I’ve had in my career,” said Wendt. When the budget was originally presented to the board of education in August it had been cut to a $5.5 million deficit from an original $7.5 million deficit. It was cut in early September to $3.8 …

Good news for the district, but makes you wonder if the defict budget was a negotiating strategy and if the unions will come back and ask for more now. Always better to under promise (deficit) and over deliver (balanced).   more ›

Ginny, a great title doesn't guarantee a great performance by that administrator. No, I am not at all satisfield with the perfomance of our schools. That requires outstanding teachers and administrators and involved parents. A fancy title tells us nothing about the person's competency, but it does require that we pay that administrator a high salary.   more ›

Show Some Love During Teacher Appreciation Week

Give a shout out to a teacher who has made a difference in your or your child's life.

Monday marks the start of Teacher Appreciation Week in Oswego District 308. There are plenty of ways to go about giving your teacher some appreciation - a card, a potted flower,  some fresh baked cookies or an apple (can never go wrong with an apple) - who, after all, is the individual that devotes forty plus hours a week to teaching our kids throughout the year. We want to spread some of that love on Patch. If you've ever had a teacher in the past or present who has inspired you, taught you something invaluable or has just been plain awesome, give them a shout out down below.  Thank you teachers for all you do!

Mrs. Nelson does have a Director of Special Education Endorsement, and has for a little while now. Comments on this site can be so disheartening at times. Just for reference, Churchill also once housed both Diagnostic and ISP programs (currently ISP only remains). Mrs. Nelson attended all IEP and informal meetings during some challenging developmental times for my son. She played an active roll …   more ›

You can look up your bill in Will County as well www.willcountytaxbill.com/. Again this year my assessed value went down on my property but my 1.56% increase raised my taxes $1000 from last year. This is really getting out of control. If they raise it like this yet again next year I will officially pay more in taxes each month then I pay on my mortgage.   more ›

District 308 Board Approves New Organizational Chart with New Administrative Positions

The chart shows a restructure of the department of teaching and learning by adding new administration areas based on priorities of the district.

Oswego 308 will be seeing some new administrative positions starting for next school year as shown in the organizational chart approved unanimously by the board of education. The chart, presented to the board members by Superintendent Dr. Matthew Wendt, was made to address the many challenges facing the growing district – the ninth largest in Illinois. Wendt said 308 is anticipating 20,000 students by 2020 and the chart will show centralized leadership and management, both very important factors to the district. The chart leads with residents at the top, who then elect the board of education, which is followed by the superintendent. You can view the full chart in the attached PDF (zoom by using the magnifying glass in the bottom left …

That "small space" can house classrooms. In regards to how these kids are gonna cram, I periodically bring up the point that maybe it's time to dismantle 308 and recombine it into two separate school districts entirely. Maybe Oswego/Montgomery being one, Aurora/Plainfield, etc. being another entirely. District 308 and District 309 ?   more ›
