Photos: PrairieFest Day Four

A look at the sights of the final day of the Oswegoland Park District's summer festival.

The curtain has fallen on another PrairieFest. But Sunday’s finale had plenty of fun for everyone who braved the heat. The centerpiece of the day, of course, was the PrairieFest Parade, and hundreds upon hundreds of people lined the downtown streets to watch the floats, bands and politicians pass by. And it didn’t disappoint – kids and their parents were delighted with the hour-long procession. But the newest attraction on the last day of PrairieFest was the inaugural bed races. Three teams signed up to race specially-designed beds down Theodore Drive, competing for charity. The Oswegoland Park District’s own team, The Queen and Her Court, won the race, but according to organizer Brian Everhart of the park district, the $750 purse will be …

A World Record at PrairieFest?

Colin Sullivan of Montgomery hopes he set the world record for balancing an eight-foot ladder on his chin on Saturday during PrairieFest. Check out the video to see him in action.

Colin Sullivan admits it’s a pretty strange talent. In many ways, this 21-year-old from Montgomery is just like most people his age. He’s amiable and funny, and has an easygoing way about him. He’s studying at Northern Illinois University to be a physical education teacher, and has a career in sight. But he can do something not everyone can: Colin Sullivan can balance things on his chin. Big things. Like the eight-foot ladder with which he hopes he set an official world record on Saturday. Sullivan’s been chin-balancing for years – his father did it when Sullivan was younger, and he just picked it up, he said. He started small, performing in school talent shows, but his balancing skills have taken him to the Ellen Degeneres Show and Live …

Photos: PrairieFest Day Three

Here's a look at some of the highlights of Saturday's PrairieFest, including a performance by the Gin Blossoms.

What can we say about Saturday at PrairieFest? This was the biggest day of the Oswegoland Park District festival, and though the wind was enough to knock you down at some points during the day, a good time was had by all. On Saturday, two teams competed in the Oswego Fire Department Bucket Brigade, which moved to the festival grounds for the first time. Local teen band Cash Inn and covers outfit Generations rocked the main stage, before the main event – the Gin Blossoms – closed things out with a set of jangly pop-rock. (That is, until the rain and lightning cut things short.) And Colin Sullivan of Montgomery may have himself a world record. The 21-year-old balanced an 8-ft. ladder on his chin for two and a half minutes in the East View …

Your PrairieFest Schedule for Sunday

Here's a look at what's in store for the final day of this year's PrairieFest.

All good things, as they say, must come to an end. And that’s the way it is with PrairieFest, which ends its annual run today. But the Oswegoland Park District still has plenty of fun in store for you. The big events of the day are the 5K and one-mile Prairie Dog Jog at 8:30 a.m., the parade at 1 p.m., and the all-new bed races down Theodore Drive at 3:30 p.m. There will be three divisions in the bed race, and the winning team in each one will get money donated to their favorite charity. There will also be a place to Make Your Case – essentially, to donate money to those charities, each of which will have an open pillowcase ready to collect your cash. And don’t forget the car show, the Rotary Club duck race, and a performance by Hix Bros. …

Photos: PrairieFest Day Two

A look at the sights of the first full day of the Oswegoland Park District's annual festival.

The first full day of PrairieFest was a hot one. Sweltering, in fact. And though attendance was down for most of the day – it’s a weekday, after all, and did we mention it was really hot? – the Oswegoland Park District festival still came through with the entertainment. Friday saw performances by local bands Back Country Roads and 7th Heaven on the main stage, as well as a set by students in the Fox River Academy of Music ad Art, and routines by Park District dance students. And at 6 p.m., a group of dancers leapt up from the main stage area, flash mob style, and put on an impromptu show. The fun got off to a late start on Friday, since someone had cut through the electrical wires powering Windy City Amusements’ rides, Oswego police said. …

Your PrairieFest Schedule for Saturday

Here's what's up for today, PrairieFest's biggest day. It all leads to a performance by pop-rockers the Gin Blossoms.

Today’s the big one, folks. Saturday at PrairieFest is the day the Oswegoland Park District goes all out. This year is no exception. The lineup, which you can see below, is topped off with a performance by the Gin Blossoms, famous in the ‘90s for a pair of chart-topping hits. (“Hey Jealousy,” “Found Out About You.”) The band has stayed intact, putting out solid pop-rock records since then, including their latest, No Chocolate Cake. In addition to the Gin Blossoms, you’ll get a performance by Generation, local teen band Cash Inn will play a set, and the Park District Dancers will entertain you. That’s all on the main stage. Two of today’s events have changed venue. First, the Oswego Fire Department’s Bucket Brigade will take place on the …

Photos: PrairieFest Day One

A look at some images from the first day of the Oswegoland Park District's massive community festival.

The first day of PrairieFest has come and gone, and if you weren’t there, you missed out. The festivities started with a blast – literally, as members of the Illinois Society of Amateur Rocketry shot rockets over the crowd, to delighted cheers. And the first day ended with a performance by Wedding Banned, a cover band with a theatrical twist. And in between, Windy City Amusements provided thrilling rides and vendors sold food to hungry families. Check out our photos, and feel free to add your own. PrairieFest is the biggest event the Oswegoland Park District organizes each year. The festival continues today, and runs through Sunday. For the lineup, read this story.

PrairieFest Kicks Off Today at 5 p.m.

The festival gates open this afternoon, and the Oswegoland Park District's biggest event of the year begins. Here's what's in store today, including an 8 p.m. performance by musical act Wedding Banned.

Well, folks, it’s here. PrairieFest kicks off today at 5 p.m. at PrairieFest Park, 91 Plank Road, and runs through Sunday. It’s the Oswegoland Park District’s biggest event of the year, and is expected to draw about 40,000 people through the weekend. What's New at PrairieFest

The Oswegoland Park District festival, which starts Thursday, is entering its 24th year. But organizers have something new planned for each day.

It’s been a tradition for more than two decades. As summer starts to get into full swing, the streets of Oswego come alive for PrairieFest. But with the festival now entering its 24th year, how do you keep it fresh? If you’re the Oswegoland Park District, you add something new and interesting to the lineup every day. You’ll still get the food, games and music you’ve come to expect – including a performance by the Gin Blossoms this year – but every day from Thursday, June 14 to Sunday, June 17 at PrairieFest Park at 91 Plank Drive will bring something PrairieFest audiences haven’t seen before, according to Kristie Vest, special events supervisor with the park district. For example, Vest said, on Thursday, June 14, the Illinois Amateur …
