Police Respond to Reports of Man Carrying Gun at St. Patrick's Church

A juvenile male was found with an Airsoft pistol in the parking lot of the church, according to police.

Yorkville police responded in force to calls reporting someone with a gun in front of St. Patrick's Catholic Church on Monday afternoon. "It was mayhem for a while," Police Chief Richard Hart said after it was all over late Monday afternoon. Sometime between 4:30 and 4:45 p.m., a 911 call reported a young man carrying a handgun, Hart said. That is about the same time children show up to the church for religious studies classes, said Father Matt Lamoureux, pastor of St. Patrick's. Hart said he was one of the first officers to respond and they found a 17-year-old juvenile male in the parking lot carrying what Hart described as an Airsoft pistol that looked like a lethal handgun. Police descended on the juvenile with weapons drawn, Hart said…

Agreed. It was terrifying. Glad it ended up not being a hand gun. And, yes, no trespassing since he was standing in a driveway across the street from the church.   more ›

So you will keep your child(ren) home on Friday, do you have a plan in place to insure they are safe at home? Will you be there to supervise them or are you going to work? Have you communicated your plan to the school so they know you have done your proper planning? There is a fine line between informing the masses and causing mass histeria. Most involved do not need to know the details. If the …   more ›

Killer Christopher Vaughn Will Get Life For Taking 4 Lives

Vaughn was convicted this summer of killing his wife and three children in a desperate attempt to free himself from responsibilities and start a new life.

Christopher Vaughn had set a plan in motion to start a new life in the Yukon with an unwitting Chicago stripper on whom he had a secret crush. Instead, he will be starting a new life in prison, and he will be staying there until he dies. Vaughn, 38, faces an automatic life sentence for killing his wife, 34-year-old Kimberly Vaughn, and three children—Blake, 8, Cassandra, 11, and Abigayle, 12—in June 2007. The Oswego man will still go through what is expected to be a lengthy sentencing hearing today. Members of Kimberly Vaughn's family are scheduled to testify. The Vaughns were making an early morning trip to a Springfield waterpark when Christopher Vaughn pulled off Interstate 55 and stopped on the frontage road outside Channahon. He …

Manager: Oswego Theater is Safe; Show Will Go On

Heath Thomas, regional manager for Goodrich Quality Theaters, says security measures in place at the Kendall 10 will keep patrons safe in the wake of the Aurora, Colo. shooting tragedy.

The shootings in Aurora, Colorado early Friday morning left 12 dead, 50 injured and a nation in shock. But the crimes were the work of an individual in need of professional help, and were not targeted toward movie theaters, nor the blockbuster The Dark Knight Rises, according to Heath Thomas, manager of Goodrich Quality Theaters’ western region. Colorado police have arrested 24-year-old James Holmes in connection with the shooting, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Police said Holmes is accused of entering the Denver-area theater during a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises, armed with tear gas, an assault rifle, a shotgun and two pistols. After letting off the tear gas, police said, Holmes opened fire. Police later found him in …

Jeff Ward: How to Scare Your Boyfriend Without Using a Shotgun

I may be a gender traitor, but I don't want to get shot, either!

Every now and then, the magnitude of an event in one of our 22 happy Friday Patch suburbs makes me sit up and take notice. And let me tell you, when the fine folks in Downers Grove set out to pique my interest, they go all in. Let’s just say, were I an inhabitant of that fine municipality and my wife, girlfriend, or maybe even my sister, asked me to do the dishes, people would say they’d never seen an old guy move that fast. I’d be practicing my best “yes dears” 24/7. Vickie D. Podruzek, 43, currently faces charges of aggravated domestic battery and aggravated battery with a firearm and may ultimately be charged with attempted murder. DuPage County Judge Elizabeth Sexton set her bail at $1 million. If she does manage to post bond, Podruzek…

This was rather funny, but would we be laughing if the story went the other way? If it was a woman a man was trying to change by shooting with a shotgun? I'm old school. I would rather see the dad in Father Knows Best rather than Everybody Loves Raymond.   more ›

Boulder Hill Woman Charged in June Shooting

The Kane County Sheriff's office has charged Jeanette Lyte with two felonies in connection with a June incident in unincorporated Aurora Township in which one woman was shot in the shoulder.

A Boulder Hill woman has been charged with two felonies in connection with a June shooting in unincorporated Aurora Township, the Kane County Sheriff’s office announced Monday. Jeanette M. Lyte, 35, of the 0-99 block of Pueblo Road, was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, Sheriff’s deputies said. The charges stem from a June 16 incident in the 700 block of Terry Avenue, in which a woman was shot in the shoulder. The woman, whose name has not been released, was taken to Provena Mercy Medical Center in Aurora, where she was treated and released, police said. No arrests were made at that time, according to police. Lyte is being held at the Kane County Jail, on $75,000 bond, police said.

Christopher Vaughn's Lawyer Fails to Make it to Murder Case; Hearing Postponed

Missouri attorney representing Oswego man charged with murdering his entire family misses Tuesday's court appearance, further delaying nearly 4-year-old case.

A half-dozen relatives of slain mother Kimberly Vaughn made the five-hour trip from the St. Louis area to Joliet for a crucial hearing in the murder case against her husband, Christopher Vaughn. But the lawyer for the allegedly murderous husband stayed back in Missouri, making the family's journey a waste. Prosecutors were poised to push for emails written by Kimberly Vaughn to be used as evidence against Christopher Vaughn, 37, said Charles B. Pelkie, the spokesman for the Will County State's Attorney's Office. But whether they were ready, Missouri attorney John Rogers was nowhere to be found, leading Judge Daniel Rozak to put off the hearing for at least a month. Rozak scheduled a May 10 appearance for Vaughn at which lawyers for both …

Officials Say Officers Were Justified in Shooting Plano Man in August

Investigation revealed that Bjorn Roland, 40, told his father he was "dead" minutes before telling officers he was armed and refusing to raise his hands.

Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis has determined that three police officers were legally justified in fatally shooting a Plano man who told them he had a gun after he stole a squad car and fired shots at an officer last summer. Weis’ decision came after state police investigated the Aug. 27 shooting of Bjorn Roland, 40, whose blood-alcohol level authorities said was more than twice the legal driving limit. The shooting involved officers from Kendall County Sheriff’s Office and the Yorkville and Plano police departments. Kendall County Sheriff Richard Randall complimented the cooperation among officers and dispatchers that night. The chiefs from the three police agencies involved said in a news release that they expected a thorough …
