Thompson Junior High School's inaugural Tiger Trot 5K and fun run raised $6,500 to renovate the school's fitness room.
On Saturday, April 27th, Thompson Junior High School in Oswego held their first annual Tiger Trot 5K and one mile fun run. The Tiger Trot was organized by the Thompson Junior High School physical education and health departments. The goal of the event was to raise funds and awareness for healthy living. The event raised about $6,500, all of which went towards Thompson’s “Life Long Fitness Fund.” These funds will be used to renovate the fitness room at the school and to buy fitness equipment that will better suit the needs of the students. The Tiger Trot kicked off with a one mile fun run/walk, which about 210 people participated in. As the name suggests, the one mile run/walk was just for fun, and many families enjoyed the walk together. …

Durwood Hafenrichter and Rodney Henderson visited students to talk about their experiences in the war.
The following was provided by Thompson Junior High teacher David Desiderio: Sixth grade students at Thompson were riveted by Durwood Hafenrichter and Rodney Henderson as they shared their first-hand accounts of the Vietnam War. Students asked the speakers questions about what the war was really like and took the opportunity to fact-check what they have been reading about the Vietnam War in their novel study on Letters From Wolfie by Patti Sherlock. Students also had the chance to see a Purple Heart medal and shrapnel from an injury sustained by Henderson during the war. Afterwards, students were able to enjoy refreshments with the veterans and talk more about their experiences.

Students in Kelli Springsteen's class received copies of "Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life" by James Patterson.
In celebration of World Book Night, social studies Kelli Springsteen and LRC Director Teresa Fawer Buan together distributed 40 free copies of the book Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life by James Patterson to their students at Thompson Junior High in order to celebrate and spread the love of reading. World Book Night was held on April 23, 2013. Buan also selected Mary Engfer’s seventh grade Language Arts class, as well as Jean Trahant’s Reading class to read Middle School The Worst Years of My Life by James Patterson. The students were given a copy of the book to keep, and the classes will be reading the novel together.

Free admission to all those who donate toys to the upcoming wrestling match.
Oswego's wrestling teams are taking donations for the Toys for Tots program during their Dec. 6 match at Oswego High School. Calling it “Grappler’s For a Cause Toy Drive”, wrestling teams are accepting new, unwrapped toys, which will go to an area family in need for the holiday season. This is the third time the teams have participated in the toy drive. Principals in place for Long Beach Elementary and Thompson Junior High. OHS gets new athletic director.
The Oswego District 308 School Board approved the hiring of three building administrators Monday night. Principals for Thompson Junior High and Long Beach Elementary along with an athletic director for Oswego High School were unanimously approved by board members as part of the district personnel report. Thompson Assistant Principal Shannon Lueders will take over the top spot at the school after the departure of Tracy Murphy, who is leaving the district for a principal position at Gower Middle school in Burr Ridge. Lueders came to the district in 2007. Donald McDowell, who taught at Traughber and Thompson junior highs, was charged in Wisconsin on Tuesday with attempting to meet a 14-year-old girl for sex, and with child pornography possession.
A retired Thompson Junior High teacher is facing charges after he was caught in Wisconsin attempting to meet up with a 14-year-old girl for sex. Donald P. McDowell, 65, of the 500 block of Danbury Drive in Oswego, was charged in Waukesha County Circuit Court in Wisconsin on Thursday with one count of using a computer to facilitate a child sex crime, and one count of possession of child pornography. If convicted, he faces up to 65 years in prison and $200,000 in fines. McDowell told police that he is a retired junior high school math teacher. Oswego School District officials confirmed that McDowell taught at Traughber Junior High from 1970 to 1977, and transferred to Thompson when it was built in 1977. On Monday, May 7 four Thompson Junior High students in Angela Robinson’s Graphic Arts class were awarded first place in the Illinois Youth Digital Safety Contest sponsored by the Illinois State Board of Education, in conjunction with the Illinois Attorney General’s Office and the Lieutenant Governor’s Office. The theme of this year’s contest was Bystander Intervention. Thompson eighth-graders Brittanny Bieneman, Breanne Aceret, and Kelsey Snodgrass won first place in the grade 7-8 video category. Eighth-grader, Margaret Hunt, won first place in the grade 7-8 slideshow category. All four students, their parents, their teacher, and Thompson’s principal attended an awards and recognition ceremony at the Governor’s Mansion in Springfield. …
