Benedict First Pope in 600 Years to Resign; Joliet Diocese Reacts

The last pope to step down was Gregory XII in 1415, who did so to end a civil war within the church.

Some Catholics reacted with shock Monday as Pope Benedict XVI announced his plans to resign on Feb. 28, 2013. The decision came during Lent, a time of penance and the liturgical season leading up to Christianity’s most important holiday, Easter. Read: Pope Benedict to Resign With his announcement, Benedict becomes the first pope to resign in nearly 600 years. On Monday, Diocese of Joliet Bishop Daniel Conlon expressed surprise at the pope’s decision. “Pope Benedict XVI’s decision to resign comes as a surprise to all of us. Yet, it is consistent with the humble disposition that I have come to recognize in him, both in my brief personal encounters with him and in his deportment generally as earthly shepherd of the Church,” Conlon said in a …

Village of Oswego Discusses Snow Removal Process Thus Far

Several cul-de-sac residents have complained about the recent snowfall not being removed from their street.

Oswego saw its first real snowfall over the weekend. Not everyone, notably cul-de-sac residents, were all too happy about it. Or rather they weren’t happy with the removal of it. Earlier in the year the Village approved a contract with Forest View Landscaping to specifically plow all of the Oswego cul-de-sacs during occasions determined by Public Works. Previously the contract only extended to some cul-de-sacs. Public Works director Jerry Weaver said the main purpose of the contract was to provide plowing services to cul-de-sac residents in a timely fashion when the need arose. Village president Brian LeClercq clarified for the board that in the case of a major snowfall the Village first takes care of all main roads. “But in order to …

Another Speedway Station Under Consideration for Oswego

Gas station would be located at Wolf Road and Route 30.

A new Speedway gas station may be headed for Oswego near the intersection of Wolf Road and Route 30. The only issue with the proposal is that part of that land is in Aurora. Oswego Community Development Director Rod Zenner said the site that Speedway is looking at is two-thirds in Oswego and one-third in Aurora.  Village officials have had several meetings with counterparts in Aurora, said Zenner, and they’re in discussion to have the back third annexed to the Village of Oswego. In exchange, Aurora would be looking for revenue sharing with Oswego. Aurora officials have also said they do not want gasoline pumps to be installed on Aurora land, said Zenner. The city also doesn't allow alcohol sales in gas stations, so Oswego would collect …

If you agree or disagree with a project, PLEASE go to the meeting(s) and voice your opinions in the "public forum" section of these meetings. I sit on the Oswego Plan Commission and always welcome input from the public. The members always do a great job of bringing pros and cons up, but having public input is great.
