State Rep. Kay Hatcher is gearing up for annual Senior Spelling Bee, this year hosted in Oswego.
The following is from a press release issued by Representative Kay Hatcher: The buzz has begun about this spring’s Senior Spelling Bee, hosted by State Representative Kay Hatcher. This year’s Bee will on Friday, April 26 at the Oswego Senior Center. “Each year I host an event so mature adults in our area can show off their ‘spelling smarts’ and each year it gets more competitive and more fun,” said Hatcher. “We move the event throughout the district. Two years ago we were in Yorkville and last year we were in Sugar Grove. The following was provided by the Oswego Senior Center: For the third year, the Oswego Senior Center will be preparing free income tax returns. Volunteers will be available every Monday starting February 4th through April 8th from 1 to 5pm. Appointments will also be available for two Saturdays, March 9th and 23rd from 9 to noon. Call 630-554-5602 to make an appointment and/or for more information. Individuals who earn $25,000 or less and Seniors and families who earn up to $51,000 are eligible for the free tax preparation of federal and state forms. Chef Mark Low, owner of European Chef to the Rescue, will be hosting another cooking demonstration at the Oswego Senior Center on Tuesday, August 28 at 12:00 p.m. All are welcome to attend. Low, once known as the “Love Board Chef” will be serving up an entire meal at the event for $6. The dishes will include a starter of classical tuscana with mozzarella, olives, pepperoni, fruit and classic olive oil, followed by an entrée of roasted rigatoni with chicken and ending with a dessert of Italian mousse with chocolate covered fruit. On Saturday, July 21st, Oswego Senior Center held its first Pig Fest. While hoping to do an outside event with good food and music, the hot weather kept everyone indoors. We want to thank everyone who supported and attended our fundraiser and especially the folks who helped with its preparation: Anne Vickery with assistance in ordering the guest of honor (the pig); our roaster in charge, Chef Alex Wallace and of course, Mr. Eleno Silva of the Riverview Diner for the donation of broasted chicken, rice pilaf, cole slaw, sweet potato casserole, cream pies and cakes. I want to thank Chief Rick Neitzer and the staff of the Oswego Fire Dept. as well as Richard Kuhn, President, of the Board of Trustees for the use of the empty Fire House on Main street for our annual Garage Sale. Due to their help, we had our best year and raised the largest amount of funds to help continue providing services to the seniors in our community. I especially what to thank Jim Detzler for all the help he has given the Oswego Senior Center. With good friends line these gentleman our center is able to grow and provide services to our seniors. We would like to thank Dr. Santosh Gill, Medical Director of Cardiology Services at Rush Copley for appearing at the Oswego Senior Center on April 25. Her talk was both informative and inspiring. In addition, our thanks go to Laura Barr from University of Illinois Extension Program and Stephanie McCubbin of Whole Foods for the cooking demonstration and tasting of healthy foods.
