Oswego Fire Responds to Rescue calls, Including Tipped School Bus and Floating Vehicle with 18-Month-Old

The Oswego Fire Protection District responded to almost 40 incidents by 2 p.m. Thursday.

The Oswego Fire Protection District was out in full force on Thursday amongst a multitude of rescue calls around Oswego.

By 2:20 p.m. Thursday, they had responded to 38 incidents with the majority of them weather-related, according to a release. Several of the incidents included:

At about 8:12 a.m. fire personnel responded to the area of Collins and Douglas for a school bus reportedly tipped in the water. They found the vehicle upright, but unstable in the rising waters. All of the occupants -- three minors and the driver-- were then successfully removed from the vehicle.

At about 8:35 a.m. the fire response team went to the area of Reservation Road and Abbeyfeele Drive for a reported passenger vehicle found trapped and floating in the water.

Two occupants were found on the roof of the vehicle, an adult and an 18-month-year old, in rising aaters about 1,000 feet from dry land.

Swift-water personnel reached the occupants and were able to remove them from atop the vehicle where they were transported via fire department rescue boat. Both were transported to Rush Copley for observation. 

Individuals stranded in paddleboat by pond overflow drain:

At about 11:39 a.m. fire personnel went to Eagleview Lane and Reservation Road for the report of multiple people stuck in a pond with one unable to keep her head above water.

The response found two adult individuals in the water trapped between their paddleboat and the pond’s overflow drainpipe. Swift-water personnel entered the water to secure both individuals and the watercraft.

At about 12:02 p.m. the individuals were freed from the drainpipe’s suction, pulled to land and immediately transported to Rush-Copley hospital by awating medic units.

In addition, at approximately 10:16 a.m., Oswego swift-water personnel and a boat were dispatched mutual-aid to Lisbon Fire and assisted in multiple boat rescues throughout their district.
